]]> Team India wore black armbands as they took the field on Day 2 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton to pay tribute to Milkha Singh, the legendary Indian sprinter, who died on Friday. Milkha Singh died of post-Covid complications at a hospital in Chandigarh where he had been admitted in early June. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tweeted shortly after play began on Saturday that the team is wearing black armbands “in remembrance of Milkha Singhji, who passed away due to COVID-19”.

Milkha Singh had tested positive for COVID-19 in May and was admitted to a private hospital in Chandigarh on May 24 as he had been suffering with COVID pneumonia. He was moved to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research on June 3.

The 91-year-old Milkha Singh died on Friday night after a month-long battle with COVID-19. He had lost his former national volleyball captain wife Nirmal Kaur to the same ailment.

]]> Milkha Singh, one of independent India’s biggest sporting icons, who died of COVID-19 complications, will be cremated here on Saturday evening.

“The cremation will take place at 5 pm today (Saturday),” a spokesperson for the family, said. The 91-year-old Milkha Singh died on Friday night after a month-long battle with COVID-19. He had lost his former national volleyball captain wife Nirmal Kaur to the same ailment.

The Padma Shri awardee, who was nicknamed ‘The Flying Sikh’ for his accomplishments, is survived by his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh condoled his death.

“Upset and saddened to hear of Milkha Singh Ji’s demise. It marks the end of an era and India & Punjab are poorer today,” Amarinder Singh said in a tweet.

“My condolences to the bereaved family & millions of fans. The legend of the Flying Sikh will reverberate for generations to come. Rest in peace Sir!”

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said India has lost a great athlete.

“Milkha Ji has left us but he will always inspire every Indian to shine for the country. ‘Flying Sikh’ will always live in the hearts of the Indians,” Khattar tweeted.

]]> Milkha Singh’s health worsened on Friday, barely two days after he was shifted out of the Covid intensive care unit at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

Hospital sources said that his condition is critical after he developed fever and his oxygen levels dropped on Thursday night.

He was admitted in the non-Covid medical intensive care unit (ICU) on Wednesday after recovering from coronavirus infection.

Though the PGI did not issue any release, it is learnt that doctors are keeping a close watch on his health.

]]> Former Commonwealth Champion Milkha Singh was initially discharged from Mohali Hospital after getting diagnosed with Covid-19 last month. But after 4 days, his oxygen level was seen reduced and was again admitted to Nehru Hospital Extension at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) this Thursday.

While the 91-year-old sports star remained six days before being discharged into the Mohali hospital, Singh’s wife Nirmal Kaur still has a fluctuating oxygen need in the ICU in the Mohali hospital.

On May 24, Singh was brought to Mohali hospital after having suffered from diarrhea and dehydration aside from a lower degree of oxygen saturation and had been contracting the Covid-19-virus on May 19 last month after one cook in his Sector 8 household had been testing Covid-19.
