Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is one of the most popular festivals in India and is celebrated to mark the arrival of Lord Ganesh to earth from Kailash Parvat with his mother Goddess Parvati/Gauri. People celebrate the festival by bringing in home an idol of Ganesh, some do this publicly under pandals/tents. What follows are collective prayers, modak distribution and eventual immersion of the idol in a river body.
