										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Nasa’s perseverance drilled into the surface of Mars failed in its initial attempt to collect rock samples that would be picked up by future missions for analysis by scientists on Earth. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The US space agency published images Friday of a small mound with a hole in its center next to the rover&#8211;the first ever dug into the Red Planet by a robot. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">But data sent to Earth by the rover after its first attempt to collect a sample and seal it in a tube indicated on rock had been gathered. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“While this is not the ‘hole-in-one’ we hoped for, there is always risk with breaking new ground,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s science mission directorate, in a statement. </span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>China has landed a spacecraft on mars for the first time in the latest advance for its space programme.</p>
<p>The official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday that the lander had touched down, citing the China National space Administration.</p>
<p>Plans call for a rover to stay in the lander for a few days of diagnostic tests before rolling down a ramp to explore an icy area of Mars known as Utopia Planitia. It will join an American one that arrived at the red planet in February.</p>
<p>China’s first Mars landing follows its launch last month of the main section of what will be a permanent space station and a mission that brought back rocks from the moon late last year.</p>
<p>The US has had nine successful landings on Mars since 1976.</p>
