]]> In the first six days of the conflict, about 6,000 Russians had died, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This comes in the wake of reports of Russian aerial forces arriving in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s 2nd largest city, and the Russian military claims to have gotten hold of Kherson, in the country’s south.

In the meantime, the administration announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “spoke to the leading figures of Russia, Ukraine, Romania, the Slovak Republic, and Poland concerning the protection and cooperation of the rescue operation of Indians from Ukraine,” and that all steps are being taken to return 40 percent of Indians trapped in the conflicted region.

According to the authorities, 30 percent percent of its total 20,000 Indians in Ukraine already have returned to India, while another 30 percent are in nearby countries.

Jitin Prasada, who defected from the Congress to the BJP earlier this year, was one of seven new ministers appointed by Yogi Adityanath’s ministry in Uttar Pradesh just four months before the state election.

 

Jitin Prasada, the only one of the seven to be appointed to the cabinet, denied that serving in the Uttar Pradesh ministry was a setback for him. The 47-year-old was a member of the Congress-led administration as a Union Minister. Earlier morning, the Chief Minister met with all of the new ministers. They have yet to be assigned ministries and only have three months until the code of conduct takes effect, so there will be no further announcements.

]]> Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, chairman of the city-based vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII), praised the Modi government on Friday, recalling how the firm used to experience “difficulties” in obtaining approvals and “bureaucratic harassment” 50 years ago.

He also stated that in the past, he had to “fall at the feet” of bureaucrats and drug regulators to obtain licenses, but that this has changed now, resulting in the speedy launch of SII’s COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield.

Mr. Poonawalla was speaking at the Lokmanyat Tilak National Award ceremony, which was hosted by the Lokmanya Tilak Trust. Sushil Kumar Shinde, a former Union minister, and prominent Congress politician praised Mr. Poonawalla’s work, saying that the SII vaccine was saving lakhs of lives.

]]> Addressing the media after chairing the 44th GST Council meet, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Council decided to go ahead with the recommendations made by the Group of Ministers (GoM) in their report. “It was felt that the GoM’s recommendations have brought substantial change. GST Council largely agreed to go with the recommendations, except for some slight tweaking,” Sitharaman said.

All these revised rates will be valid till September 30 as against August-end, she added.

The meeting was attended by minister of state (MoS) for finance Anurag Thakur, finance ministers of states and Union territories and senior officers from the government and states.

Tax on medicines, some hospital equipment and other items needed in the fight against COVID-19 has been reduced by the Goods and Services Tax Council. The tax cut is based on recommendations by a Group of Ministers amid the pandemic, whose crippling effects on the economy has also hurt household finance, the constitutional body that decides rates for the GST has said.

No tax will be charged for medicines like the monoclonal antibody Tocilizumab and Amphotericin B, used for treating Black Fungus, an opportunistic fungal disease that affects people infected with Covid.

There is no change in the GST rate of some items being charged at 18 per cent, such as RT-PCR machines, RNA extraction machines and genome sequencing machines. Genome sequencing kits that are being charged at 12 per cent will continued to be charged at the same rate.
