Three migrant workers from Paschim Bardhaman district in West Bengal have alleged that they were assaulted in Maharashtra after being suspected of being Bangladeshis for speaking in Bengali. The incident has sparked strong political reactions in West Bengal, with leaders trading blame over the safety of migrant workers.

The workers, identified as Dilip Bagdi and Samir Barui, along with another colleague from Pandabeswar, said the incident took place while they were returning home from Maharashtra.

This image has been posted for representational purposes only.

According to their account, the trouble began when some local residents overheard them conversing in Bengali among themselves, even though they had used Hindi while purchasing their travel tickets.

They claimed that locals confronted them, questioned their nationality, and insisted they were Bangladeshis, despite repeated explanations that they were residents of West Bengal. The workers alleged that they were forcibly removed from their mode of transport and taken to another location, where their Aadhaar cards were checked for verification.

Samir Barui said that even after showing valid Aadhaar cards, their claims of being Indian citizens were rejected. The workers further alleged that they were subjected to physical assault, during which hot tea was poured over their heads and they were kicked on the head and stomach.

According to them, the attack continued even after one of the workers pretended to fall ill in an attempt to stop the violence.

The incident comes amid growing complaints in recent months about alleged harassment and attacks on Bengali speaking migrant workers in different states. Such cases have been reported particularly from regions governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, including Odisha and Rajasthan.

Pandabeswar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty met the affected workers after their return and condemned the incident. He blamed the central government for creating what he described as a hostile environment against Bengali speaking people outside the state. He said that while West Bengal welcomes people from across the country, Bengalis are being targeted elsewhere, and warned that such actions would not be forgotten.

Responding to the allegations, local BJP leader Dilip Chakraborty accused the West Bengal government of failing to generate adequate employment opportunities. He said this situation was forcing workers to migrate to states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh in search of livelihoods.

The BJP also suggested that the incident may have been narrated with political intent, pointing to what it described as inconsistencies in the workers’ statements.

Mumbai | The Bombay High Court, on Monday, instructed the Maharashtra government and the Election Commission of India to submit their responses to a petition demanding the registration of an FIR, against MNS chief Raj Thackeray over allegations that he assaulted individuals for not using Marathi.

The PIL was filed by advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay, who asserted that Thackeray and members of his party had repeatedly targeted people, who do not speak Marathi and often focused on individuals, who migrated from other regions of the country. The petition also requested intervention and appropriate steps from the Election Commission.

Representing the petitioner, advocate Subhash Jha argued that such actions by the MNS typically escalate during the build up to elections.

A division bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad, ordered both the state government and the Election Commission to file their affidavits within four weeks.
The court also instructed the petitioner to remove references that label communities by region noting that the expression hate speech alone conveyed the point adequately.

According to the petition Raj Thackeray allegedly provoked acts of violence during a rally on July 5 by urging supporters to strike individuals who do not speak Marathi below the ear.

Mumbai | Former Maharashtra School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar stated on Thursday that he had provided financial assistance to Rohit Arya, who lost his life during a police operation after taking 19 people hostage in Powai

Arya, aged 50, previously served as a project director for an initiative under the education department. Kesarkar explained that Arya had collected money from students through a website, which raised concerns within the department

Arya had also staged a protest in Pune last year regarding unpaid dues from the education department. After Arya raised concerns about delayed payments, Kesarkar met him and offered financial support

During the Powai incident, Mumbai Police rescued 19 people, including 17 children, while Arya succumbed to bullet injuries during the operation

According to a government resolution from January 25, 2024, Arya served as director of Project Let’s Change, overseeing the Swachhta Monitor initiative between July 20 and October 2, 2023

The initiative involved school students acting as Swachhta monitors to discourage spitting and littering in public spaces, with participation from 64,000 schools and 5.9 million students

The second phase of the program was part of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Shala, Sundar Shala scheme, with a sanctioned budget of Rs 20.63 crore. Arya managed Rs 2 crore allocated specifically for Swachhta Monitor phase two

Kesarkar emphasized that he had not defaulted on any payments and had helped Arya out of courtesy. He noted that the department required Arya to explain the money collected from students and could have sought funds directly from the government

In a video before the police intervention, Arya claimed he held the children hostage to initiate a conversation and ask questions

Last year, Arya staged an indefinite strike in Pune over pending payments and suffered an epileptic seizure during the protest. His wife, Anjali Arya, mentioned that her husband had been trying to secure overdue funds for his project

She added that although the state government sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the Swachhta Monitor initiative, Arya received neither the funds nor recognition for completing the project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged Opposition-ruled states to decrease VAT and cooperate “in the spirit of cooperative federalism” in this “time of global crisis,” citing high fuel prices in states that did not follow the Centre’s request to lower VAT on gasoline and diesel. These states, he claimed, were doing them an “injustice” and injuring nearby states by not handing on advantages to the citizens.

The Prime Minister stated that a proposal to cut VAT was made in November, but states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jharkhand “for some reason” did not comply.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who is on the verge of allying with the BJP and breakaway Akali groups, slammed the Congress, his party of more than 40 years, today. He claimed that the Congress is not a secular party, citing its alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and the induction of multiple leaders from the BJP and its mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, including current state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The majority of his rage was directed at Harish Rawat, the Congress in-charge of Punjab, who called Mr. Singh’s announcement on Tuesday shocking and claimed that he had “killed the secular Amarinder within him.”
