A year after a monster explosion at Beirut’s port, one in three families in Lebanon have children still showing signs of trauma, the UN said Tuesday.

“One in three families (34 percent) has children still showing signs of psychological distress,” said the UN agency for children, UNICEF, citing a July survey of 1,200 families.

“In the case of adults, the figure reaches almost one in two (45.6 percent),” it added in a report published on the eve of the blast’s first anniversary.

The August 4, 2020 explosion killed more than 200 people, wounded at least 6,500 others and damaged swathes of the capital.

In the year since, Lebanon has also had to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic and a spiralling economic crisis branded by the World Bank as one of the planet’s worst since the mid-19th century.

“One year after the tragic events, children’s lives remain deeply affected,” said Yukie Mokuo, UNICEF’s representative in Lebanon.

“Those families have been struggling to recover from the aftermath of the explosions at the worst possible time – in the middle of a devastating economic crisis and a major pandemic.

A UNICEF survey in July found that almost all families that requested assistance in the wake of the Beirut port blast still need help, especially cash and food assistance, the agency said.

Many who lost employment because of the blast have yet to find work, UNICEF added, as Lebanon grapples with soaring poverty, rampant inflation and shortages of basic items from medicine to fuel.

Children’s lives are at risk as the escalating crisis is leaving most families unable to afford their basic needs,” Mokuo said.

Lebanon’s medication importers claimed they were out of hundreds of vital drugs and cautioned of future shortfalls if the country’s cash-strapped central bank did not provide funding.

Lebanese are facing a slew of limitations, from gasoline to medicines, as the caretaker government considers eliminating subsidies it can no longer be able to afford in the midst of what the World Bank calls one of the world’s greatest financial crises since the 1850s.

In the illicit market, the local currency has shed more than 90% of its worth, but the central bank has been supplying importers with dollars at the far more advantageous official rate to pay a substantial portion of the cost of imported medications.

Four rockets were fired from Lebanon at Israel on Wednesday, 19th May. Although it was not immediately clear as to who did that, security sources from Lebanon confirmed that four rockets had been fired towards Israel from a village near the Southern Coastal Lebanese city of Tyre.

In response to this, the Israeli Defence Forces artillery forces have striked a number of targets in Lebanon. The Israeli military also confirmed that they had intercepted one of the rockets while the rest most likely fell in open areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage on either sides of the border.

Israeli military spokesperson, Hidai Zilberman said on Tuesday that the Israeli Military believed a small Palestinian faction was responsible for the attack. They also told that the Hezbollah terrorist group which has influence in Southern Lebanon and across to advanced rockets is not responsible.

India has sent 58 metric tonnes of emergency humanitarian aid, including crucial medical and food supplies, to Lebanon whose capital Beirut was rocked by a deadly explosion.

“India demonstrates solidarity with the people of Lebanon in the aftermath of the tragic explosions in Beirut. 58 MT of emergency humanitarian aid, including crucial medical and food supplies, is on its way to Beirut in IAF C17 aircraft,” external affairs minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet on Friday.

The August 4 blast, which killed more than 170 people, wounded thousands and left tens of thousands homeless, is believed to have been caused when a fire touched off a stockpile of 2,750 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate, according to reports. The ministry of external affairs had said last week that India has sought from the Lebanese government an assessment of damage caused by the blast, based on which it will decide on the nature of assistance it will extend to the West Asian country.
