After the Nipah virus returned in Kerala, five districts in Karnataka have been placed on high alert. The Nipah virus (NiV) is a newly discovered zoonotic illness.

On Tuesday, the state’s health and family welfare department issued an alert emphasizing the importance of surveillance and preparedness in the districts bordering Kerala: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Mysuru, Kodagu, and Chamarajanagar. The virus can be transferred to humans by animals (bats or pigs) or contaminated food, according to the World Health Organization.

Nipah virus has no therapy or vaccine available for humans or animals at this time. Supportive care is the primary treatment for humans.
