A youth is accused of using an offensive and altered photo as his WhatsApp status, injuring religious emotions. According to claims in the media, he allegedly changed a photo of a saffron flag flying above Mecca’s mosque. The youngster, identified as Abhishek Hiremath, was detained after a complaint was filed at the Old Hubballi police station. He lives in Hubballi’s Anand Nagar neighborhood, which has a higher Muslim population.

The populace was furious and dissatisfied with the police response. Demonstrators gheraoed the police station late Saturday night, pelting stones and causing damage to police cars. To keep the mob under control, police reverted to using lathi charges and rubber bullets. To disperse the gathering, they fired rounds into the air and launched tear gas shells.

Following a request by Muslim organizations for a bandh on Thursday to oppose the Karnataka High Court’s decision sustaining the prohibition on wearing hijab in academic institutions, a few stores in Bengaluru were closed. In Udupi, however, there was a mixed reaction to the bandh. The opposing Congress resolved to adopt a neutral stance on Wednesday. Regarding the attitude of Congress Muslim leaders on the hijab matter, a Congress representative said, “We had a meeting with religious leaders and have agreed to support the legal struggle on the matter.”

Following the Holi holiday, the Supreme Court said it will reconsider hearing an appeal against the HC ruling. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana informed senior attorney Sanjay Hegde, who had requested an expedited listing. Starting Thursday, the Supreme Court will be off for three days for Holi and will reconvene on March 21.

The hijab is not an important religious practice, according to the Karnataka High Court, which today upheld the ban on hijab in schools, which was contested by a number of Muslim students in a nationwide protest that started last year at a school. Three justices refused to overturn the state government’s prohibition, saying, “We are of the considered conclusion that wearing of hijab by Muslim women does not form a component of important religious practice in the Islamic religion.”

The Karnataka government issued an order on February 5 banning apparel from schools and universities that “disturb equality, integrity, and public order.” From March 15 to 19, Mangalore also prohibited public meetings. In Udupi, where the uprisings began in December, schools and institutions are closed today.

Party candidates did not receive the expected number of votes in the Hangal byelection, according to Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai. He did, however, make it plain that he is taking this setback seriously and that all necessary repairs will be made.

He said: “In Sindagi, we won with a huge margin. We were are not able to get the vote at the level of late MLA CM Udasi. It is the first reason. Secondly, people supported Congress candidate Srinivas Mane for his works in the constituency for the last two-three years including at the time of Covid-19. So, we are defeated. I am accepting the defeat. Party leaders and workers worked very hard for the victory in the Hangal constituency. I thank all of them.”

As per the official order by the Joint Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), “BBMP bans slaughter of animal and meat sale on September 10, 2021, on Ganesha Chaturthi.”

Earlier, on September 5, the Karnataka government informed that no more than 20 people will be allowed for celebrations and immersion of the Ganesha idol.

“No celebrations will be allowed after 9 pm. Night curfew to remain in effect during the festival to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic,” read the Standard Operating Procedures issued by the government.

The order further informed, “No processions will be allowed. Only eco-friendly Ganesha idols will be allowed. Distribution of food and prasad will not be allowed during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. No function to take place in districts with more than 2 per cent positivity rate in view of the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka logged 1,102 fresh cases of COVID-19 and 17 fatalities today, as per State Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar.
