Bengaluru | A Fast Track Court has issued summons to former Karnataka chief minister, B. S. Yediyurappa along with three others in a case involving allegations of sexual assault on a minor girl, directing all four accused to appear before the court on December 2.

This development follows the recent decision of the Karnataka High Court, allowing the trial to move forward
On November 13, the High Court declined to quash the POCSO case filed against Yediyurappa and the three co accused.

The court dismissed the petitions filed by Yediyurappa, Aruna YM, Rudresha Marulasiddaiah and Mariswamy G, who had challenged the trial court’s decision to take cognizance of offences under the POCSO Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the issuance of summons.

However, the High Court clarified that Yediyurappa’s personal appearance should not be required unless necessary during the trial, adding that any request for exemption should be considered unless his presence becomes essential. The court also noted that Yediyurappa may seek discharge before the trial court.

The case originates from a complaint filed in March 2024, by the mother of a 17 year old girl, who alleged that the former chief minister assaulted her daughter at his residence in Dollars Colony in February, when she had gone there seeking assistance.

Bengaluru| Karnataka’s Labour Minister Santosh Lad has responded to Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty’s decision to opt out of the ongoing socio-economic and education survey, popularly referred to as the caste survey, being conducted by the Congress-led government in the state.

Speaking to the media, Lad said, “Whatever she has said is her way of expression. It’s her choice. As a government, we cannot compel anyone to participate in this. Whether someone is influential or not is subjective and debatable. I don’t think her decision will have any major impact on society. If she has taken her stand, I respect it.”

The minister’s remarks come after Sudha Murty and her husband, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, declined to participate in the survey.

In a self-attested letter addressed to the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, the Murty family stated that they do not identify as belonging to a backward community and therefore chose not to participate.

The letter further mentioned, “We and our family will not participate in the census, and we are confirming it through this letter.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that government schools will remain closed from October 8 to October 18 to allow teachers participating in the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey to complete their assigned work.

With the changeover of command fast approaching, the BJP’s high brass is considering recommending the party’s current national general secretary, BL Santhosh, as the replacement to Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

The talk of a shift of guard acquired unusual traction in the state when the 78-year-old Lingayat strongman and the BJP’s ageing symbol in Karnataka announced on July 23 that he would follow the party high command’s judgment on whether to continue as chief minister or to resign.

According to top BJP bureaucrats in New Delhi, in addition to Santhosh, the top management is considering four deputy chief ministers, including Laxman Suvadi, who belonged to the Lingayat minority, which is one of the largest in Karnataka, accounting for almost 15% of the population of the state.

The Karnataka Government will conduct the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC), or Class 10th exam for the current academic year on July 19 and 22. While tomorrow, on July 19, the core subject exam — Science, Maths and Social Science will be held, on July 22, exam for languages will take place. The duration of the SSLC exam will be three hours. The exam will be held on the OMR sheets, where students will be asked simple and direct questions.

The government decided to conduct the exam, setting aside the fear among a section of people that they would be risking the lives of children amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While most other states have decided to promote the students of Class 10th considering the constraints of Covid, Karnataka decided to hold the exam saying that it is crucial for students to select their stream.

Karnataka SSLC Exams And Covid Situation

Considering the ongoing Covid situation. the government has also arranged transportation for children to reach the exam centres.

“The Managing Director of the Transport Corporation has issued a circular allowing children to travel in buses by displaying their admission cards.  Instructions have been given to ensure that no child should miss the examination for want of a vehicle,” Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said earlier.

Also, as per reports, the teachers got in touch with parents and students and explained to them the measures the state government has taken to conduct the SSLC Class 10th exams.

The Karnataka government had initially announced 14 days ‘close down’ from April 27, but subsequently imposed a complete lockdown from May 10 to May 24, as the COVID-19 cases continued to spike. Citing lockdown yielding results and experts advice, it was further extended till June 7 and then again till June 14.

Revenue Minister R Ashoka on Wednesday indicated that the state may go for unlocking in four to five phases after June 14, as the COVID-19 induced lockdown comes to an end.

“Keeping the number of deaths and new cases in mind and aimed at bringing down the COVID infections further, lockdown will not be relaxed at one go. Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Health Minister K Sudhakar and I have held detailed discussions with the Chief Minister in this regard,” Ashoka said.

Speaking to reporters,  he said lockdown will be relaxed in phases, most probably it may be done in four to five phases.

First will be timings, now the relaxation (for shopping) that is there between 6 to 10 am, it may get extended further. Also those who go for a walk at parks may get some relief. All this is subjected to a final decision by the Chief Minister. Lockdown will not be relaxed at one go,” he added.

Karnataka on Tuesday reported less than 10,000 new cases of COVID-19 and 179 fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 27,17,289 and the death toll to 32,099.

The Karnataka government on Monday decided to inform the Supreme Court that it favoured increasing the cap on reservation beyond the 50% ceiling, PTI reported. The state’s decision was in response to the court’s query on the restructuring of quotas.

In a landmark judgement in 1992, the Supreme Court had capped reservation at 50%. However, while hearing a petition related to reservation for Marathas in education and jobs, the Supreme Court issued a notice to all states, seeking their response on whether quota should be allowed beyond the limit. The court said that it will examine whether the 50% rule needs to be reconsidered..The Karnataka government’s decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, sources in the state Secretariat told The Hindu. Earlier, Karnataka’s Law and Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai had said in the Legislative Assembly that it was “inevitable” to go beyond the 50% cap in order to meet the demands of various castes.

The Yediyurappa-led government is likely to cite constitutional amendments, changes in related laws by states and changing social dynamics, in its arguments to the Supreme Court, Karnataka at present provides 15% reservation for Scheduled Castes, 3% for Scheduled Tribes and 32% for the Other Backward Classes (OBC), which add up to 50%.

Dominant communities like the Panchamasali, a sub sect of Lingayats, Vokkaligas, Valmikis and Kurubas have sought a higher quota and a change in category among other requests, according to the Hindustan Times. The SCs have demanded an increase in their quota from 15% to 17% and the STs from 3% to 7.5%,
