]]>In an interview, she said that the filmmakers had everything to lose by casting her, and if they felt she’s suited for the role, then there must be some ‘merit’ to it.
Kangana Rananut told Film Companion South, “I thought I was the worst casting for Thalaivii. The worst there can be. Vijendra sir came to me, and I saw Jaya maa’s videos, and I was like ‘what!’”
She continued, “He kept saying, ‘You have to do it, you have to do it’. And the sheer obstacles of me, in my 30s, to gain 20-25 kgs of weight. And who knows how I’ll look after gaining… I would go mad, I would stress about it, and at this stage of my career I have so much to lose. So I was filled with doubts when it came to Thalaivii… Few people gave me a lot of confidence. Vijendra sir comes from the Telugu industry, but it’s Vijay sir who actually… He said, ‘You will do it, you are the perfect casting’. And I thought he will be bashed in Tamil Nadu and he has so much to lose; people are going to be offended. But he’s a big director, there must be some merit in it. He also has everything to lose. You know how people are. Jaya maa has temples. They will burn theatres if someone doesn’t live up to (expectations). That kind of passion people have for her. So his conviction worked a lot for me.”
Thalaivii, co-starring Arvind Swami, Nassar and Bhagyashree, traces the life of Jayalalithaa from when she was an ingenue in the movies to her career as a politician. The film is slated for a theatrical release on September 10.

They have released Master with 2 weeks window, releasing Hollywood movies with simultaneous OTT release in US, but refusing to screen even the South of THALAIVII which have a 4 weeks window. @pyrcinemas official @inoxmovies the system makes sure that no woman rises and then complains why don’t we have women superstars bringing audiences to theatre on her own like men do…”
However, the Padma Shri award-winning actor in her latest post said that one of the biggest multiplex chains of India, has agreed to screen the South versions of the film. She posted an excerpt from PVR’s statement on her Instagram handle that read, “Thalaivii is one of the most keenly awaited films. Also, Ms Kangana Ranaut’s acting prowess and exceptional box office pull are well-established facts. We are thankful to Thalaivii team for offering a four-week theatrical window for its Tamil and Telugu language versions.”
“We are delighted to be able to play Thalaivii in Tamil and Telugu language at our cinemas, however, we are disappointed that for the Hindi language version, Thalaivii team has decided to offer only a 2 week window. We would like to appeal to Ms Kangana, Mr Vishnu Induri II Mr Shailesh Singh to keep a uniform window of 4 weeks across all language versions and therefore allow all cinemas across the country to showcase Thalaivii to audiences, on the big screen. Our best wishes to the Thalaivii team!,” the statement concluded.
Sharing the statement, Kangana thanked PVR’s team for the decision and wrote, “PVR’s decision to screen the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film is a ray of hope for Team Thalaivii as well as all those cinegoers who are waiting to rush back to their favourite multiplex chain for a cinematic experience. I am personally moved by the kind words used for me.”
She further wrote, “Team Thalaivii, and I hope with talks, and a passion for the theatrical experience, we can come together to find a solution so that the Hindi version can also find love and appreciation on the big screen @pvrcinemas_official – Lots of Love, Kangana.”
The movie marks Kangana’s second biopic after the 2019 film ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’. Helmed by A.L Vijay, ‘Thalaivii’ revolves around the life of late politician Jayalalithaa. In the film, Kangana will be seen essaying the titular role of Jayalalithaa. Also, the film is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide in Hindi, Tamil and Telegu. It was earlier scheduled to release in April, but it got postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19.

Kangana recently has wrapped up shooting her film Dhaakad in Budapest. After bidding an emotional goodbye to his team on the sets, Kangana attended the wrap-up party, followed by a dinner with the team. She took to Instagram and shared a few pictures from the celebrations.
Apart from ‘Dhaakad’, Kangana also has films such as “Thalaivi”, period drama “Manikarnika Returns: The Legend Of Didda” and “Tejas” in the pipeline. Kangana will also don the Director’s hat for the second time in film “Emergency”, based on the life of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
