Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he would not be attending the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, due to limited time ahead of the Jewish holiday Shemini Atzeret-Simchat Torah, which begins tonight.

Although earlier reports suggested Netanyahu had accepted an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to join the high-level diplomatic gathering, his office later clarified that he would not be traveling. According to The Times of Israel, Netanyahu made the decision while present in the Knesset Chamber with US President Donald Trump, during a conversation with President al-Sisi.

In a statement shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Prime Minister’s Office noted that Trump also extended an invitation to Netanyahu for the summit. However, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude and declined, citing scheduling conflicts related to the upcoming religious observance.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited by US President Donald Trump to attend today’s conference in Egypt. The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for the invitation but said he will be unable to attend due to time constraints ahead of the start of the holiday,” the statement read.

Traditionally, Israeli leaders avoid official travel during major Jewish holidays or the Sabbath, unless exceptional national circumstances arise, according to The Times of Isreal

]]> Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Wednesday that vaccinations and renewed restrictions could spare Israel another lockdown, even as coronavirus infections soar.

“Our goal is to keep Israel open but not reach a situation where hospitals will say we’re full,” he said on a tour of a new vaccination centre in Jerusalem.

“We’re seeking to avoid that, and know when to hit the brakes,” Bennett said.

“To refrain from harsher restrictions, we’ll get vaccinated, wear masks and maintain distancing.”

Bennett’s government had announced a package of new restrictions Tuesday, including requiring vaccine certificates or negative tests for entry to venues holding fewer than 100 people, and mandatory mask wearing in open spaces holding more than 100.

Announcing the new restrictions, the cabinet’s Covid committee warned the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus was spreading fast and called on Israelis to “stop shaking hands, embracing and kissing.”

The health ministry has also expanded the list of countries from which arrivals are required to quarantine, regardless of their vaccination or testing status, to include France, Italy and the United States, among other countries.

For the past week and a half, Israel has been recording an average of more than 2,000 new cases a day, with 229 people in serious condition — the highest since April.

The rise in infections is a step back after Israel’s world-leading vaccine campaign drove down new Covid-19 cases from 10,000 a day to fewer than 100.

Israel had lifted most Covid restrictions in early June, but began reimposing some of them last month following the resurgence of cases.

Nearly 60 percent of Israel’s 9.3 million people have had two shots, mostly of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

But about one million Israelis still refuse to be vaccinated even though they are eligible.

Israel last week rolled out a booster shot for the over-60s. It has also made children as young as 12 eligible for inoculation.

Rescue efforts for the Kharg lasted many hours, with the whole crew departing. However, all attempts to salvage the ship were futile, and it sunk. Iran announced in April that one of its ships, the Saviz, had been targeted in the Red Sea, following media allegations that the ship had been struck with limpet mines.

The Gaza strip is now focussing on rebuilding the territory a day after the hold of the airstrike. Rescue workers are searching for the bodies or the survivors after the “war”. Dozens of city fishermen are preparing nets before moving toward the sea, on Gaza ports.

One of the fishermen, Rami  Abu Amira said,”We need to eat. We, fishermen, are scared the Israeli navy will shoot at us. It’s up to everyone to decide whether to go or not”.

The attack on Gaza killed 248 people including 66 children, and 1,900 wounded since May 10. The United Nation says that half of the people killed, are civilians.

Soumya Santosh was from Kerala’s Idukki district and was a caregiver professional. She was attending an old woman at a house in the Southern Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon. She died in a rocket attack from Gaza while she was talking to her husband on May 11.

Mr. Rivlin called her family on Wednesday and expressed his condolences. He said that he hopes they would find comfort in her “generosity and kind-heartedness”.

A statement from the Presidency said,”President of Israel Reuven Rivlin spoke earlier this week with the family of Soumya Santosh, an Indian citizen working as a caregiver in Israel, who was killed in rocket fire on Ashkelon on Tuesday (May 11)”. ]]> Four rockets were fired from Lebanon at Israel on Wednesday, 19th May. Although it was not immediately clear as to who did that, security sources from Lebanon confirmed that four rockets had been fired towards Israel from a village near the Southern Coastal Lebanese city of Tyre.

In response to this, the Israeli Defence Forces artillery forces have striked a number of targets in Lebanon. The Israeli military also confirmed that they had intercepted one of the rockets while the rest most likely fell in open areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage on either sides of the border.
