The red alert for Chennai has been lifted, but the India Meteorological Department has warned that strong gusts and heavy rain may continue in some areas of the city as a depression in the Bay of Bengal begins to cross the boundary between south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu.

 

Arrivals at Chennai airport, which had been halted between 1.15 and 6 p.m., have now resumed, according to the Chennai airport authorities. Following the restart of services, the airport has requested customers to contact their individual airlines for updates on flight schedules. According to the IMD, heavy rains are forecast in a few spots in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’ has weakened into a depression. In a rare weather phenomenon, cyclone Gulab, which started in the Bay of Bengal, may re-emerge as cyclone ‘Shaheen’ in 2-3 days, according to weather officials. Qatar, which is a member of the member countries, gave the name “Shaheen” to a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy torrential rains in portions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through July 28 in its most recent forecast. According to the meteorological service, severe to very heavy rainfall activity is expected in these regions on July 26 due to the effect of the western end of the monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued new weather forecasts on Sunday, forecasting significant rainfall in certain regions from July 26 to July 29. Rainfall momentum is likely to intensify across the Western Himalayan Region and surrounding plains of northwest India beginning on July 26th, as per reports.

During the 26th-29th of July, the IMD predicts moderately extensive to pervasive rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It has also forecasted comparable rainfall activities across Uttarakhand from July 25th to July 29th, as well as over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) elevated an initial orange category notice for July 21 and 22 to Red at 1 pm, suggesting a greater likelihood of severe weather occurrences.

“This has been raised to red alert today, signifying the possibility of exceptionally heavy rain, taking into account the synoptic condition,” said a meteorologist of the IMD in Mumbai.

On Wednesday, the city awoke to its fourth consecutive day of rain, with 23.9mm of rain falling in the 24 hours finishing at 8.30 am.

Heavy to very heavy rains are predicted over Mumbai, with the possibility of very heavy rain (over 204.5mm) in localized spots throughout the day, as well as winds blowing of 40-50 kph, gusting to 60 mph in certain parts.

After the severe cyclonic storm Tauktae, the country is facing a new threat of cyclonic storm. The cyclone is very likely to hit the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha by May 26-27. The India Meteorological department  gave the information on Wednesday.

The MeT department also said that a low-pressure area is to form over the north Andaman sea and the east-central Bay of Bengal. The depression holds the capability to intensify into a cyclonic storm which will form from May 21.

The Cyclone warning division of the IMD said,”It is very likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 72 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards and reach West Bengal- Odisha coasts around May 26 evening”.

Other atmospheric and oceanic conditions like favourable environment for the movement. Furthermore, Sea surface temperatures are also favourable at the time to form persistent clouds. These conditions will help in the formation of the cyclonic storm from May 22. The fishermen and the boats will be instructed not to move out in the sea from May 22.

The meteorological department has issued an ‘orange’ alert for heavy rain in several parts of Delhi. The Met department said in its latest statement that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Delhi. The weakening of the cyclonic storm Tauktae and the western disturbance is the reason of the scenario. Strong winds are also expected to blow with a speed of 60 kmph.

The IMD has also predicted water eruption in various areas which will cause major traffic disruption. Delhi and the neighbouring areas have received a moderate rainfall today.  According to the weather office, the rainfall is most likely to decrease on Thursday.

The highest temperature in the moved to a bit more than 30 degrees celsius because of the wind and the rainfall. This is the lowest temperature recorded in the month of May since the last four years.
