Imran Khan was ousted as Prime Minister of Pakistan in the early hours of Sunday after losing a no-confidence motion in the Pakistan National Assembly. The National Assembly meeting, which started at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday, has been postponed many times. The House will reconvene at 2 p.m. on April 11 to pick a new Prime Minister. Before the vote, Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri quit.

Imran Khan, who was elected Into power in 2018, was subjected to a no-confidence vote, which was mostly based on allegations of economic failure. Hardly a Pakistani prime minister has ever served for the whole five-year tenure.

The administration of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was dealt a major setback as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM) reached an agreement with the rival Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). As of now, the Imran Khan administration has blown its support in Pakistan’s lower house of parliament, after late-night developments in the days leading up to the no-confidence move or no-trust vote against him.

Post the governing coalition partner MQM-P opted to break away from the Imran Khan-led administration, Pakistan’s unified opposition currently has 177 members of the national legislature (Members of National Assembly).

Importantly, Pakistan’s combined opposition needed the backing of 172 MNAs to pass a no-confidence resolution against the Prime Minister.

Pakistan’s opposition parties accused Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday of selling gifts from foreign heads of state, including a $1 million watch.

During a state visit, gifts are routinely exchanged between heads of state or officers holding constitutional positions. Unless sold at an open auction, these gifts remain the property of the state, according to the rules of the gift depository (Toshakhana). According to The Express Tribune, officials are allowed to keep gifts with a market value of less than Rs 10,000 without paying anything.

The ruling party of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has won a majority of seats in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s regional assembly, the head of the election commission announced on Monday.

Analysts say polarisation in Pakistan’s politics pushed the main national parties to focus on the polls in the semi-autonomous region, tightening races in an election that is often overlooked and traditionally won by the national ruling party.

Khan, who came to power in a 2018 election, has faced growing criticism over his management of Pakistan’s economy and his ability to deliver on campaign promises, including pledges to create millions of new jobs and root out corruption.

His Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) won 25 seats in the 45-seat assembly in Sunday’s poll, Chief Election Commissioner Abdul Rashid Sulehria told a news conference.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of former premier late Benazir Bhutto secured 11 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which had previously held a majority in the body, took just six seats.

Kashmir’s outgoing Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, of the PML-N, contested two seats, losing one and winning the other by only 300 votes.

Two local groups each won a single seat, Sulehria said, while the result from one constituency had been withheld.

Sulehria dismissed accusations, mainly from the PML-N, that Khan’s party had rigged the election.

“We have fulfilled our promise to conduct free, fair and transparent elections,” he told journalists in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday that Pakistan would not restore diplomatic ties with India until New Delhi revokes its decision of scrapping the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

India abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 on August 5, 2019 and bifurcated it into two Union territories. “I want to make it clear that diplomatic relations will not be restored with India until it rescinds the illegal steps of 5th August 2019,” Khan said while addressing the National Assembly.

Khan said that “entire Pakistan stands by their Kashmiri brothers and sisters”.

His statement comes amid reports of back-channel contacts between the two sides which led to a ceasefire on the Line of Control in February but no further movement has been reported to normalise the ties.

Pakistan had downgraded ties with India and suspended trade after the Indian government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that Pakistan was under “pressure” from the US and other Western powers over his country’s all-weather ties with China and vowed to never buckle under pressure.

Pakistan and China enjoy a “very special relationship” spanning over 70 years and nothing could change these time-tested ties, Khan said in an interview with China’s English-language state-broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN), an excerpt of which was shared on his Instagram account.

Talking about the evolving regional rivalry between the US and China, Khan said that “Pakistan thinks it is very unfair for the US or other powers – western power” to pressurise “countries like us to take sides” in a conflict with China.

“Why should we take sides? We should have good relations with everyone. It is not going to happen if pressure is put on Pakistan to change its relationship or downgrade its relationship with China, it wouldn’t happen,” Khan said.

Emphasising the deep relationship with China, Khan said that Pakistan would never bend under any kind of pressure. “Whatever will happen, our relationship between the two countries – no matter what pressure is put on us – is not going to change,” he said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had a “slip of tongue” when he called slain al-Qaeda chief and 9/11 terror attacks mastermind Osama bin Laden a “martyr”, Pakistan’s federal minister for information and broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has said. Speaking to Geo News, Chaudhry stressed that Pakistan considers Osama bin Laden a terrorist and al-Qaeda as a terrorist outfit.

Addressing Pakistan’s national assembly in June last year, Imran Khan had termed bin Laden, who was killed in 2011 by US special forces in Abbottabad, a “martyr.” “I will never forget how we Pakistanis were embarrassed when the Americans came into Abbottabad and killed Osama bin Laden, martyred him,” Khan had said.

Pakistan was not informed in advance when the US Navy Seals carried out Operation Neptune Spear to eliminate Osama bin Laden under cover of darkness in Abbottabad. Bin Laden was accused of engineering a number of terror attacks worldwide, particularly targeting the American installations including the twin towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Imran Khan had come under fire from opposition leaders for portraying bin Laden as a “martyr.” “He destroyed my nation, and [Khan] is calling him a martyr,” former foreign minister Khawaja Asif had then blasted Khan in the parliament. Imran Khan’s remark on the slain al-Qaeda terrorist resurfaced after a year following Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s recent interview with TOLO News.

“He [Imran Khan] was quoted out of context. And, uh, you know, a particular section of the media played it up,” Qureshi said.

When the foreign minister was pressed by the interviewer whether he disagreed that bin Laden was a martyr, he took a brief pause and said, “I will let that pass.”

Qureshi also deflected blame from the Taliban for the surge in violence in neighbouring Afghanistan. “You try and create this impression that the violence is high because of Taliban, again, that would be an exaggeration. Aren’t there other elements over there who are playing the role of a spoiler?” said Qureshi, suggesting that Islamic State and the Afghan government were responsible.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in an interview to the New York Times said he knows India better than all other Pakistanis and has enjoyed “love and respect” from the country because of the two nations’ shared love for cricket. “You know, probably out of all the Pakistanis, I know India better than all of them. I have had love and respect from India [more] than any one because cricket is a big sport. It’s almost religion in both the countries,” the legendary former cricketer said.

He expressed disappointment on being unable to normalise trade ties with India despite reaching out after assuming office, adding that a “civilised trading relationship” would be beneficial for both countries.

“So when I assumed office, the first thing I did was I made this approach to Prime Minister Modi and said that, ‘Look, my main objective for coming to power is to alleviate poverty in Pakistan.’ And the best way would be if India and Pakistan had a normal, civilised trading relationship. It would benefit both the countries,” Khan said.

“I think that it is a peculiar ideology of the RSS, which Narendra Modi belongs to, which just came up against a brick wall. And, therefore, the answer to your question is yes. Had there been another Indian leadership, I think we would have had a good relationship with them. And yes, we would have resolved all our differences through dialogue,” he added.
