]]>With one gold, two silver and four bronze medals, India’s total of seven medals in Tokyo bettered the previous best haul of six at the London Games in 2012.
India’s tricolour was raised during the medal ceremonies in weightlifting, hockey, badminton, wrestling, boxing and athletics at this edition of the Olympics.
Here’s a look at all the Indian medallists in Tokyo:
Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting) – Silver Medal
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal as she lifted a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg) in the women’s 49 kg category. Chanu finished behind Hou Zhihui of China, who took the gold medal while Indonesia’s Windy Aisah won bronze. This was India’s second overall medal in weightlifting at the Olympics. Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari had previously won bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
PV Sindhu (Badminton) – Bronze Medal
India’s badminton star PV Sindhu carried on from where she left at the last Olympics and brought back another medal for the country in the women’s singles event. After winning silver in Rio 2016, Sindhu picked up a bronze this time when she overcame China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 in the bronze medal match.
Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing) – Bronze Medal
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain picked up the country’s third ever Olympic medal in boxing when she secured a bronze in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) category, following on the footsteps of Vijender Singh and MC Mary Kom’s bronze medals in 2008 and 2012, respectively. She displayed immense grit in her semi-final bout against eventual champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey but lost via unanimous decision. Hong Gu of China secured silver after losing the final to the Turk.
Indian Team (Men’s Hockey) – Bronze Medal
The Indian men’s hockey team ended a 41-year medal drought at the Olympics after defeating Germany 5-4 in a thrilling comeback victory in the bronze medal match. India, eight-time winners of the men’s hockey gold at the Olympics, had last clinched an Olympic medal in the sport at the 1980 Moscow Games, where they won the gold.
Ravi Dahiya (Wrestling) – Silver Medal
Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya took the second spot in the men’s freestyle 57kg category after losing a close final bout to ROC’s Zavur Uguev 4-7. Dahiya showcased great determination as he pushed two-time world champion Uguev to his limits and came agonisingly close to earning a gold medal for the country. However, Uguev used his experience to get over the line, leaving Dahiya to be content with the silver medal.
Bajrang Punia (Wrestling) – Bronze Medal
Bajrang Punia won India’s second wrestling medal as he defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 in men’s 65kg freestyle to win bronze. After losing to Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev in the semi-finals, Bajrang dominated his Kazakh opponent to ease to victory in the bronze medal bout.
Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw) – Gold Medal
India’s first ever Olympic gold in athletics came in Tokyo when Neeraj Chopra put on a stellar display to register a best throw of 87.58m in the final to seal victory. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch and Vitezslav Vesely won silver and bronze, respectively. This was also India’s first gold medal since Abhinav Bindra in Beijing 2008 and only the second ever individual gold medal.

He also congratulated all the members of the team and their coach for their achievement – the best finish by Indian women’s hockey team in past 41 years.
PM Modi further inquired about the injury sustained by India’s Navneet Kaur after colliding with Argentina’s Agustina Gorzelany in the hockey semi-final match.
Taking the names of each players, PM congratulated them and asked them to stop crying as he could hear them break down.
Rani Rampal, the team captain, thanked the Prime Minister for the encouragement. PM Modi then went on to praise Vandana Katariya and Salima Tete for their performance at the match.
“Please stop crying. The whole of India is proud of you. There is no need for disappointment. India’s identity in hockey has been revived and it’s because of you people,” he added.
The Prime Minister also spoke with team coach Sjoerd Marijne and thanked him for his and the team’s hard work.

]]>Determined to clinch a medal, the Indians made one of the most memorable comebacks in the history of the game, fighting back from a two-goal deficit to turn the match in their favour.
It is India’s third hockey bronze medal in the history of the Olympics. The other two came in the 1968 Mexico city and 1972 Munich games.
Simranjeet Singh scored a brace , while Hardik Singh , Harman preet Singh and Rupinderpal Singh were other goal getters for india.

]]>The Indian men’s hockey team’s dream of entering the Olympics final after 41-years remained unfulfilled as it lost 2-5 to world champions Belgium in the last-four stage but the side is still in the hunt for a bronze in the Tokyo Games.
“Wins and losses are a part of life. Our Men’s Hockey Team at #Tokyo2020 gave their best and that is what counts,” Mr Modi tweeted.
Wishing the team the very best for the next match and their future endeavours, he said , adding that “India is proud of our players”.

]]>The win versus Japan on Friday was India’s third consecutive at the Games. The Manpreet Singh-led side had defeated defending champions Argentina 3-1 on Thursday.
Gurjant Singh then scored early in the second quarter as India doubled their lead over the hosts. However, Japan came back with a goal as Tanaka opened the team’s account.
On Friday, both the teams showed caution in the beginning but the Manpreet Singh-led side broke the shackles and netted the first goal in the 13th minute.
In the third quarter, Kota Watanabe scored an equaliser but Shamsher Singh again put India on top as after netting in the the 34th minute. With India leading 3-2, a thrilling final quarter was on cards. In the final quarter, Nilakanta Sharma doubled India’s lead after a desperate attempt from both sides to find the net. Moments later, Gurjan scored again to make it 5-2 in favour of India.
Japan showed some spark towards the end and Kazuma Murata managed even a goal with less than one minute remaining but that was not enough for his side which failed to win a single match in their 5 group stage matches.
The quarter-final match will be played on Sunday.

]]>Besides Manpreet, defender Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, drag-flicker Varun Kumar and goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak have also tested positive for the dreaded virus.
I am self quarantined at the SAI campus and I am very happy with the way SAI authorities have handled the situation…I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon, I am very happy that they made testing of athletes mandatory. That proactive step helped in identifying the problem right in time ”
The 28-year-old Manpreet said in the statement issued by SAI.
The players tested positive after returning to the national hockey camp at the SAI South Centre in Bengaluru following a month-long break.

A SAI source, however, said that the camp will resume from August 20 as planned with the fit players.
“As of now the camp is on and will resume as planned. The fit players can start their individual training and the players who have tested positive for COVID can resume later after recovering but they will have to pass a fitness test,” the source said.
The national players were earlier stranded at the centre for over two months (till June) when a national lockdown was imposed to contain the virus.
After coming back from the break, the players were in mandatory quarantine before training’s resumption at the centre.
According to SAI, Pathak’s result came late from the state government.
“…SAI made it mandatory for all athletes , who reported back to the camp to take a rapid COVID-19 test upon arrival,” the SAI said in a statement.
According to the SAI source all the players who have tested positive were part of a 10-member group who have travelled together and there are chances of more positive results come out.
“Don’t be surprised if some more positive results come out,” the SAI source said.
“Since all the athletes who tested positive had travelled together, there is a high likelihood that they contracted the virus while travelling from their hometowns to Bengaluru.”
The SAI further said that all the five players initially tested negative in the rapid test.
But when Manpreet and Surender began to show some COVID-19 symptoms, they along with 10 other players, who had travelled together, were made to undergo the Quantitative RT-PCR test on Thursday.
“…and the five have been found to be COVID positive. Though the test results have still not been handed over to SAI, but the state government has informed the test results to the SAI authorities,” the SAI said.
“The quarantined athletes did not interact with other athletes who were already present at the camp,” the SAI said.
The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the state government and of SAI were being followed strictly across the campus.
