SkyWatch Weather India has issued a red alert for Palghar district and several parts of South Gujarat, including Vapi and Valsad, warning of very heavy rainfall from Wednesday night until Thursday evening.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as disaster management teams have been placed on high alert. Local administrations are closely monitoring water levels in low-lying areas and coordinating with weather agencies to provide timely updates.

In Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, fresh showers are expected between 10 pm Wednesday and 1 pm Thursday, with rainfall projected between 60 mm and 90 mm. Officials, however, confirmed that the worst phase of heavy rains in Mumbai is over, though waterlogging and traffic disruptions may still occur in several pockets.

An official from SkyWatch Weather India stated:

“Palghar and South Gujarat are likely to see intense rainfall in the next 24 hours. While Mumbai continues to receive showers, extreme conditions are unlikely there.”

Travel advisories have been issued, cautioning citizens against visiting coastal regions and urging commuters to stay updated on transport alerts. Emergency helplines have been activated, and residents are advised to prepare for possible disruptions.

With the monsoon currents strengthening along the Konkan coast, weather experts warn that Palghar, Vapi, and Valsad could face flash floods if rainfall intensifies overnight.

In its weather forecast for the week, the IMD said that Konkan region and Goa may get very heavy falls on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The southern part of the country will see widespread rainfall activity in the next 24 hours, with Telangana expected to received isolated very heavy falls today, the weather department said.

The rainfall activity is expected to increase in the Northeast region from Wednesday, the IMD forecast added. “Scattered rainfall activity very likely over Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains of Northwest India during next 4-5 days. Isolated heavy falls also very likely over Uttarakhand on 30th August, 2021,” it said.

The IMD has said that during heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, inundation and water logging in low-lying areas in Madhya Pradesh and other states. There is a possibility of landslides, reduction in visibility, damage to vulnerable structure and standing crops in these states, the weather department said.

It also suggested action for the common people to avoid any loss of life of injury:

– Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.

– Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.

-Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.

-Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.

The IMD on Sunday issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand. There have been intermittent rains in the state since Saturday night, which triggered landslides and waterlogging in various places.

According to the information received from the Disaster Management Department (DMD), more than 200 roads including five National Highways, 15 state highways are blocked in Uttarakhand due to incessant rains and efforts are being made to open them.

As heavy rains lashed the metropolis on Sunday, the water supply throughout Mumbai was announced suspended until further notice. It happened as a result of the incessant downpour which hit the power supply at the Bhandup water complex — the city’s biggest water treatment plant.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed that the city’s water supply will be restored only once the electricity is back at the Bhandup complex.

The civic body has asked Mumbaikars to use water sparingly until the supply is fully restored. It also asked citizens to boil water before consuming for maximum safety.

Meanwhile, power outages have been reported in various parts of the city including Colaba, Bandra, Kurla, Malad, Kandivali, Ghatkopar, Mahalaxmi, Sewri, Wadala and Mumbai Central.

The downpour, which started after midnight, continued non-stop and led to waterlogging or flooding in several low-lying areas of Mumbai.

Also, as many as 25 persons have been killed in over 10 different incidents across the city as rains wreaked havoc on Sunday.

At least 17 persons were killed when a wall collapsed after a tree fell at Vashi Naka, New Bharat Nagar in the Chembur area around 1 am.

In another incident, at least 3 people perished when a few hutments caved in the Suryanagar slums in Vikhroli east.

Heavy rains, coupled with thunderstorms and strong winds, lashed Mumbai and its suburbs on Saturday, leading to disruption of train and bus services as tracks and roads got waterlogged at several locations.

A Central Railway spokesperson told PTI that the suburban train services between Dadar and Kurla stations on the main line were suspended after the water rose above the track level, while a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) official said that several of its buses had to be diverted due to water-logging at some points. Waterlogging was witnessed at several locations in Bandra East, Hindmata, King’s Circle, Kurla Kamani and Wadala, with BEST diverting its buses on at least 17 locations due to waterlogging on roads.

Mumbai has been receiving heavy rainfall since the last few days, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city on Sunday and orange alert for June 14 (Monday). After the IMD’s forecast, the BMC also issued a “high alert” to all the agencies considering “very heavy rainfall” in the next two days.

The south-west monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday, the IMD announced as heavy rains lashed the country’s financial capital and suburbs since early morning. Waterlogging was reported in some low-lying areas, but the local train services remained unaffected, while routes of some best buses run the city civic body’s transport wing were diverted. A high tide of over four metres is expected around noon in the Arabian Sea, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

With heavy rains causing water-logging,  Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray directed the administration to ensure that the accumulated rainwater is drained out at the earliest and transport resumed. Thackeray spoke to the control rooms in Mumbai and collectors of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Palghar districts as incessant rains led to the inundation of several areas, affecting the normal life. The Chief Minister’s Office said the Met department has declared the arrival of monsoon and predicted medium to very heavy rains in the next three days.

IMD Mumbai Deputy Director General Dr Jayanta Sarkar told news agency ANI, “Monsoon has arrived in Mumbai today, normal arrival date is 10th June every year so it has arrived prior to the average arrival date.”

Central railway PRO said local train services between Kurla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus have been halted as water is flowing over tracks between Kurla and Sion railway stations. “Traffic stopped at 9.50 am, decision taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident. Traffic will resume as soon as water recedes,” he added.

Mumbai’s Colaba and Santacruz recorded 65.4 mm and 50.4 mm of rainfall respectively between 8:30 am on Tuesday and 5:30 am on Wednesday. South Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall since late Tuesday night. Entire stretch of Breach Candy has been waterlogged and footpath too has been submerged. Rainfall also caused low visibility on eastern freeway.
