]]>Speaking to Spanish radio network COPE, Francis, 84, dismissed an Italian newspaper report that he might step down, saying: “I don’t know where they got it from last week that I was going to resign … it didn’t even cross my mind.”
He also said he was almost certain to attend the U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow in November.
In the interview, the pope thanked a male nurse at the Vatican for convincing him to undergo surgery to remove part of his colon rather than continuing treatment with antibiotics and other medicines, as some doctors had favoured.
“He saved my life,” the pope said.
Francis, who was elected pontiff in 2013, underwent surgery on July 4 and spent 11 days in hospital. He had been suffering from a severe case of symptomatic diverticular stenosis, a narrowing of the colon.
“Now I can eat everything, which was not possible before … I lead a totally normal life,” he said, adding that 33 centimetres (13 inches) of his intestine was removed.
He further dismissed the report of his potential resignation by outlining his full schedule, with a trip to Hungary and Slovakia on Sept. 12-15 and visits to Cyprus, Greece and Malta in the pipeline as well his planned attendance at COP26.
Newspaper Libero reported on Aug. 23 that there was “a conclave in the air” at the Vatican – a reference to the secret meeting at which cardinals choose a new pope when the incumbent dies or resigns. It said Francis had spoken of resigning, possibly to coincide with his 85th birthday in December.
Whenever a pope is ill there is always a breeze or a hurricane about a conclave,” he told COPE.

]]>In a brief statement, Cairns’ wife Melanie said it was a “difficult, upsetting and concerning” situation for the family.
She said Cairns suffered “a major medical event” in Canberra and had since undergone heart surgery in both the Australian capital and Sydney.
“Chris’ family and friends are heartened by the respectful and warm manner in which this terrible news has been reported and received by the public, both in New Zealand around the world, and thanks everyone for their warm wishes, prayers and kind words,” she said.
“For now no further statements will be made regarding Chris’ situation.”
New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said the cricket fraternity was “deeply concerned” to learn of Cairns’ medical emergency.
Chris is a much loved husband, father, and son – and remains one of our finest all-rounders. We hope he’s able to make a full recovery.” White said.
Black Caps great Brendon McCullum put aside past differences with Cairns to lead messages of support.

]]>Shivaraj Daware is suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) , a rare genetic disorder.
The injection (Zolgensma – gene replacement therapy) manufactured by a US-based firm is the most effective drug for such patients, according to doctors.
After the initial diagnosis, Shivraj was referred for treatment to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai where neurologist Dr Brajesh Udani suggested that Zolgensma injection was the drug of choice to save Shivraj’s life , Vishal Daware recalled while speaking to PTI.

]]>The number of dengue cases for the January 1-July 31 period is also the highest this year since 2018 when the count was 56 in that same period.
Sixteen cases were reported in the month of July, according to the report.
Dengue mosquito larvae breed in clear, standing water, while those of malaria thrive even in dirty water.
Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, but the period may stretch till mid-December.
However, no deaths have been reported due to dengue in the city till now, it said.
According to the civic report released on Monday, 21 cases of malaria and 18 cases of chikungunya have also been reported till July 31 this year.
Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are accompanied with high fever and therefore, doctors feel that people might suspect that they have contracted COVID-19.

Congratulating NCDC for its contributions, Mandaviya said that India has performed better than many other countries in fighting the pandemic, a Health ministry statement stated.
He said new dimensions have been added today in the legacy of 112 years of achievements of NCDC and encouraged it to strive for further innovations so that not only India but the whole world can benefit from its work.
Scientists, doctors, officers and staff of NCDC should collectively chart out goals they want to achieve in the coming years, he said.
“The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need of creating vigilance and awareness on zoonotic diseases,” he said, adding that division of Zoonotic Disease Programme at NCDC under the “National One health Programme for prevention and Control of Zoonoses” has created IEC materials on seven priority zoonotic diseases namely Rabies, Scrub Typhus, Brucellosis, Anthrax, CCHF, Nipah and Kyasanur Forest Disease in India.
Zonotic diseases pass from animal or insect to humans.

]]>“Doctors and nurses would be trained to cope with the possible third wave and already the infrastructure at all the paediatric wards in the government hospitals across the state have been upgraded,” Dr Radhakrishnan told news agency PTI. He also said localised cases will be closely monitored and the “government’s efforts are oriented towards averting any new infections.”
The Tamil Nadu health secretary pointed out that the causal approach among the people towards the pandemic could lead to a spurt in Covid-19 cases. “Some people are still not wearing face masks or following social distancing. The absence of masks and non-conformity to social distancing norms are causing concern,” Dr Radhakrishnan said, while cautioning that this could affect the efforts of containing the spread of the infection.
Tamil Nadu has so far registered 2,548,497 cases of the coronavirus disease of which 33,911 have succumbed to it while nearly 2.5 million have recovered and the active cases stand at 23,364. On Sunday, the state recorded 1,808 fresh cases and 22 deaths. The daily cases in Tamil Nadu have been declining since July 20, when 1,904 were detected Covid positive.

]]>The 98-year-old screen icon was admitted in suburban Khar-based Hinduja Hospital, a non-COVID-19 facility, on Tuesday to address age-related “medical issues”.
Sahab is much better. We are still in the ICU. He is very stable and very well today. (Need) Prayers to get him out of here hale and hearty. Let us get out of the woods, we are still in the woods,” Saira Banu told PTI.
The 76-year-old veteran also thanked fans and well-wishers for their unending care and support for Dilip Kumar. According to a hospital source, Kumar’s breathlessness is also under control. However, he will continue to remain in the hospital for a day or two.
His breathlessness seems to be under control. He is still being kept under observation (in ICU) that is what the family wants. Looking at his age and all, they want to make sure he is problem free before he leaves from here,” a hospital source told PTI.
Dilip Kumar was admitted to the same hospital in June following episodes of breathlessness.

]]>The doctors studied the effect of remdesivir and tocilizumab on 521 patients at KEM hospital and compared it with retrospective clinical details of 214 patients from a time when they were not available as experimental drugs for Covid (from March 23 to May 31, 2020).
Of the 334 (64%) patients discharged after being given either or both the drugs, only five needed supplemental oxygen. The doctors’ observational study was published on July 1 in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India.
The doctors found that hospitalisation (median days) was maximum in the tocilizumab group — 47 days. It was 14 days in the remdesivir group and 10 in the group receiving both drugs. Patients requiring vasopressors, medicines that help in tightening blood vessels and raising blood pressure, had higher mortality, said Dr Vishal Gupta, associate professor, intensive care, department of medicine, from the hospital and also the principal investigator of the study.
