Comedian Kunal Kamra is back in the headlines after releasing a claimed video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conversation with a toddler in Germany on Twitter, where the boy substituted a patriotic song (‘Hey Janmabhoomi Bharat’) with one about inflation (‘Mehengayi daayan khaaye jaat hain’).

There was outrage from certain quarters, as well as a remark from the father of the seven-year-old youngster. The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken action against the comedian and requested that the video be removed from social media sites immediately.

The leading child rights organization responded to Twitter’s complaint officer, saying it had received a report about Kamra posting a “doctored” video of a youngster performing a patriotic song to promote his own political objectives.

On Tuesday, Germany’s Malaika Mihambo soared to gold in the women’s long jump at the Olympics , snatching victory from former champion Brittney Reese with her last leap of the competition.

Mihambo was laying in the bronze medal position ahead of her final jump, but powered down the runaway to register a season-best jump of 7.00 metres.

That left 2012 Olympic champion reese– who had led the competition with a best jump of 6.97m– with one final attempt to reclaim the lead.

But the American could only manage 6.84 with her last leap to settle for silver.

Nigeria’s Ese Brune took the bronze medal with a best jump of 6.97m.

“41.8 million Germans now have full protection, while 61.1 percent have received at least one shot. The more people who get vaccinated ,the safer we will be in autumn and winter,” Spahn wrote on Twitter.

Germany’s vaccination campaign accelerated in the spring after a sluggish first few months, yet the country remains some way off the 80 percent targeted for herd immunity.

Unlike other European countries such as France and Greece, Germany has so far ruled out introducing compulsory jabs for certain parts of the population

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief of staff says restrictions for unvaccinated people may be necessary if case numbers reach new heights in the coming months. But Helge Braun said in an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag that he doesn’t expect another coronavirus-related lockdown in Germany.

Braun said that unvaccinated people may be barred from entering venues like restaurants, movie theaters and stadiums “because the residual risk is too high.”

Braun said getting vaccinated is important to protect against severe disease and because “vaccinated people will definitely have more freedoms than unvaccinated people.”

Braun said that such policies would be legal because “the state has the responsibility to protect the health of its citizens.”

Germany’s vaccine efforts have slowed in recent weeks and that has led to discussions about how to encourage those who haven’t yet received a vaccine to do so. More than 60 per cent of the German population has received at least one dose while over 49 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the need to “speed up” the fight against climate change, as the death count from devastating floods in Germany reached 177 on Thursday.

Merkel, who is retiring after September elections, said that Germany and other countries had “not done enough” to meet the goal set out in the Paris climate accord of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“We shouldn’t pretend that we haven’t done anything, but it’s true that not enough has been done to reach the aim of staying well under two degrees and as close to 1.5 degrees as possible,” Merkel told reporters.

That is not just true of Germany, but of many countries across the world, which is why we need to increase the tempo.”

Merkel had already called for faster climate action last Sunday as she visited flood victims in Rhineland-Palatinate state.

One of the regions worst hit by last week’s devastating floods, Rhineland-Palatinate said Thursday that its death count had reached 128, taking the total count to 177 in Germany and 209 across Europe.

Merkel’s cabinet approved a huge emergency aid package Wednesday for flood-stricken regions, unlocking some 400 million euros ($470 million) in immediate relief.

We have also made clear that this sum will be increased if it proves not to be enough,” Merkel said Thursday.

She added that society faced a “profound transformation” as European governments looked to reach carbon neutrality in the coming decades.

Merkel, who will leave office after 16 years following the September 26 poll, defended her record on the environment.

She pointed to new emissions reductions targets agreed by her government earlier this year, which mean Germany now aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2045, five years earlier than the previous target.

The move came after Germany’s highest court demanded the government revise its targets, which it said were not ambitious enough.

On Friday, Most of the western Germany was stunned without emergency services coming and still combing with the wreckage caused by floods.

Devastating floods have torn through entire villages and killed at least 150 people in Europe.

Streets and houses were submerged by water in some areas, while cars were left overturned on soaked streets after flood water passed some districts were completely cut off.

Unsuspecting residents were caught completely off guard by the torrent dubbed the “flood of death” by German newspaper bild.

“Everything was under water within 15 minutes,” Agron Berisha, a 21-year-old decorator from bad neuenahr in Rhineland-Palatinate state, told AFP.

“Our flat, our office, our neighbour’s houses everywhere was under water”.

Flooding in western Germany has left six people dead and many missing, and caused at least six houses to collapse.

On Thursday, police said that four people were dead and 30 missing around the wine-growing hub of ahrweiler, south of Bonn, after the Ahr river, which flows into the Rhine, burst its banks , bringing down the houses. Around 50 were stranded on roofs, and more houses were at risk of collapse.

“There are many places where fire brigades and rescue workers have been deployed. We don’t yet have a very precise picture because rescue measures are continuing,” a police spokesperson said.

Rail and road transport were disrupted and shipping on the Rhine, an important trade artery, was suspended.

On Tuesday, chancellor Angela Merkal said Germany is not planning to follow France and other countries in introducing compulsory Covid-19 vaccinations for the parts of the population.

“We do not intend to go down this road”, Merkel said in Berlin after visiting the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) public health agency.

“We are at the beginning of the phase in which we are still promoting (vaccination), where we have more vaccines than we have people who want to be vaccinated,” she said.

After a slow start to its vaccination campaign earlier this year, Germany sped up its drive over the summer and had by Tuesday fully vaccinated 42.6 percent of adults, with 58.5 percent vaccinated at least once.

German diplomat Walter J Lindner said Germany is removing the restriction against most passengers from five nations affected by the ‘Delta’ form of COVID-19. On Monday, the German Public Health Agency Robert Koch Institute announced that India, Nepal, Russia, Portugal and the United Kingdom, which are presently designated as ‘the variation of viruses,’ would be reclassified as ‘high incidence locations,’ starting Wednesday.

The shift implies that travellers visiting these nations have easier criteria. Persons with both vaccine doses or with evidence of recovery from COVID do not need to isolate themselves upon return or arrival.
