According to Defense sources, a team from the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully flight-tested the indigenously developed Long-Range (LR) Bomb from an airborne platform in Balasore, Odisha, on Friday.

The LR Bomb was accurately guided to a land-based target at long range within prescribed limits after being released by an IAF fighter aircraft. They claimed that all of the mission’s goals were met.

Several range sensors, including the Electro-Optical Tracking System, telemetry, and radar installed by the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, observed the bomb’s flight and performance, according to the sources.

Two hundred Americans and other foreigners who remain in Afghanistan are set to depart the war-ravaged country on charter flights from Kabul on Thursday after the new Taliban government agreed to their evacuation, a U.S. official said.

The departures will be among the first international flights to take off from Kabul airport since the Taliban seized the capital in mid-August, triggering the chaotic U.S.-led evacuation of 124,000 foreigners and at-risk Afghans.

The move comes two days after the Taliban announced an interim government made up mainly of ethnic Pashtun men including wanted terror suspects and Islamist hardliners, dashing international hopes for a more moderate administration.

The Taliban were pressed to allow the departures by U.S. Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. official said, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The official could not say whether the American civilians and other foreign nationals were among people stranded for days in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif because their private charters had not been allowed to depart.

The Taliban’s announcement of a new government on Tuesday was widely seen as a signal they were not looking to broaden their base and present a more tolerant face to the world, as they had suggested they would do before their military takeover.

Foreign countries greeted the interim government with caution and dismay on Wednesday. In Kabul, dozens of women took to the streets in protest.

Many critics called on the leadership to respect basic human rights and revive the economy, which faces collapse amid steep inflation, food shortages and the prospect of foreign aid being slashed as countries seek to isolate the Taliban.

The civil aviation ministry has reviewed the price cap on domestic flight tickets increasing the price by 9 to 12 per cent. After the nationwide lockdown imposed in March 2020, when domestic flights resumed operations, the government fixed the upper and the lower limit of the airfares in an attempt to boost air traffic. While that cap has not still been withdrawn, the ministry has revised the lower and upper limit of the ticket prices, effectively bringing a hike in domestic airfare. This also makes the fourth hike.

According to the order, flights under 40 minutes of duration will now cost ₹2,900 – a hike f ₹300 from the previous fare of ₹2,600. This is an increase of 11.53 per cent, while the upper limit has been increased by 12.82 per cent from 7,800 to 8,880.  Flights with a duration between 40-60 minutes will cost a minimum of ₹3,700 instead of ₹3,300 and a maximum of ₹11,000 instead of ₹9,800.

The actual price, however, will be more than this as the caps mentioned by the government in its order does not include the passenger security fee, user development fee for the airports and the GST.

The prices have been revised keeping in mind the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country, the ministry said.

The revision comes at a time when domestic travel has picked momentum and with other countries relaxing lockdown restrictions on Indian flights, international passenger flights to several destinations are resuming.

This is the 4th time that the flight ticket prices have been revised. Ticket prices were revised in February, May and June. The hike is the air traffic fuel price is the reason for the consecutive hikes.

The government of Canada on Tuesday said that it is extending the flight ban from India till August 21 over fears of the Delta variant Covid-19 cases spreading.

The ongoing ban on incoming passenger flights from India to Canada has been extended for a month. Canada had restricted air travel from India in April when Covid-19 cases started to peak in India during the second wave.

The Canadian media reported on Tuesday that the flight ban that was to end on July 21 has now been further extended till August 21.

Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra has said that the ban on flights from India is mainly over the concerns of the Delta variant causing fresh spikes in Covid-19 cases in many countries.

“While progress is being made, the situation in India is still very serious,” the Canadian minister said. “The decision is based on the advice received from the Public Health Agency of Canada, and will best protect Canadians from an increased introduction of the Delta variant, which is prevalent in India.”
