Salman Khan became a household name after Maine Pyaar Kiya but his entry into films happened a year earlier with the 1988 release Biwi Ho Toh Aisi. The film marked the directorial debut of J K Bihari who unknowingly launched a future superstar purely on instinct and belief.

A Scene from the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi

Bihari, who had earlier assisted legendary filmmaker K Asif on Love And God and later worked closely with producer K C Bokadia, says Salman’s innocence and natural way of speaking stood out instantly. According to him, Sooraj Barjatya only needed to see that sincerity to take a leap of faith which eventually reshaped Hindi cinema.

Biwi Ho Toh Aisi starred Rekha in the lead role, a casting that many believed was impossible for a first time director. Bihari recalls approaching Rekha directly with the subject and explaining that it was the title role. Despite her usual reluctance to work with debut directors, Rekha agreed after learning about his association with K Asif. The film was completed and released within six months, defying industry doubts.

Salman Khan was cast without an audition. Bihari remembers seeing a young man walking near his office with a file in hand and deciding instantly that he was right for the role of Rekha’s brother in law. At that time, he did not even know that Salman was Salim Khan’s son. There were no auditions or vanity vans in those days, and even senior actors worked with minimal comforts.

During the shoot, Salman was inexperienced but eager to learn. Rekha and Farooque Shaikh supported him on set, helping him grow into the role. While working on the film, Salman signed a three film contract with Bihari. When he was later offered Maine Pyaar Kiya, the makers asked him to obtain a no objection certificate. Recognising the opportunity, Bihari tore up the contract himself, encouraging Salman to move ahead.

Biwi Ho Toh Aisi went on to become a hit, performing especially well in smaller centres and enjoying long runs in several regions. Even today, audiences continue to enjoy the film on television.

Years later, Bihari met Salman again at Mehboob Studio where Salman was shooting with Aamir Khan. On seeing his first director, Salman immediately walked up to him, hugged him warmly and introduced him to Aamir Khan as the man who launched his career. The two spent hours reminiscing and discussing future possibilities.

Bihari later faced professional setbacks and health challenges which slowed his filmmaking journey. However, he remains hopeful of collaborating again, possibly to support his son’s directorial ambitions, bringing the story full circle.

From working in a studio canteen to assisting K Asif and eventually launching one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, J K Bihari’s journey reflects the unpredictable yet magical nature of the film industry, where instinct, timing and generosity can change lives forever.

“V Shantaram” is a historical drama that honors the life and career of the director who revolutionized Indian cinema, tracing his evolution from the silent film era to his position as a cinematic pioneer.

The film delves into Shantaram’s significant impact on Indian filmmaking and his role in shaping modern cinema.

Speaking about her role, Tamannaah expressed her excitement and pride in portraying such an important character: “It’s a great responsibility to portray a character rooted in one of the most influential eras of our cinema. I feel immensely honored to bring Jayashree to life, as she has been part of such legendary projects, and the grace she had was surreal. Shantaram built a legacy that continues to shape generations, and decoding his universe has allowed me to witness the brilliance of the man behind the legend. Bringing a piece of that legacy to the screen is truly a special feeling, and I am thankful for the makers of V Shantaram to see me as Jayashree.”

Earlier, the film’s makers revealed that Siddhant Chaturvedi will star as V Shantaram, marking a major milestone in his career.

Produced by Rahul Kiran Shantaram, Subhash Kale, and Sarita Ashwin Varde, the film is presented by Rajkamal Entertainment, Camera Take Films, and Roaring Rivers Production. Directed by Abhijeet Shirish Despande, V Shantaram promises to be a cinematic tribute to one of the most visionary filmmakers in India’s history.

Director V. Shantaram with his wife Jaishree

V Shantaram, born Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre in 1901, was a pioneering filmmaker whose career spanned over seven decades. He founded two major film studios—Prabhat Film Company in 1929 and Rajkamal Kalamandir in 1942—and directed the first Marathi-language talkie, Ayodhyecha Raja (1932). His films, such as Duniya Na Mane (1937), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), and Navrang (1959), were not only known for their technical innovations but also for their progressive themes on social issues like communal harmony, dowry, and prisoner rehabilitation.

V Shantaram was renowned for his lavish sets, unique song picturizations, and use of visual symbolism, employing cinema as a medium for social change. His contributions to the film industry were recognized with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1985, cementing his place as a true legend in Indian cinema.

Actress Raima Sen says she has realised over her years in Bollywood that one is as good as one’s last release. The actress adds that the film industry is all about the survival of the fittest.

You are as good as your last release in this industry. So, you will always be noticed for your last work but I guess that is fine and that is the way it is. You just have to deal with it positively because there are a lot of ups and downs,” Raima told IANS.

She says it is only natural that success and failure should co-exist in an industry where survival stakes are always high.

There will always be failure where there is success, and the industry is about survival of the fittest. So, obviously the show that does well will get you recognised and the show that does not do well will not get you recognised,” Raima added.

The actress’ last outing, the web series “The Last Hour”, was well received and she feels such judgements happen in every sphere.

Raima will next be seen in the upcoming OTT show “Mai”. About the show, she said: “I am doing another big show for Netflix called ‘Mai’. So, you will get to see me a lot more.”

Asserting that the government in power has no role in film certification, veteran director Shyam Benegal on Friday said filmmakers  concerns over the Centre’s proposal to amend the Cinematograph Act are “natural”. On June 18, the Centre had sought public comments on the draft Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2021 which proposes to penalise film piracy with a jail term and fine, introduce age-based certification, and empower the Central government to order recertification of an already certified film following receipt of complaints.

Several industry veterans, including actors and filmmakers, have called the proposal a “blow to the film fraternity” as they believe it will potentially endanger freedom of expression and democratic dissent in their letter to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Friday.

Benegal, who headed a committee to take a holistic look at the functioning of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and submitted its report to the I&B Ministry in 2016, said the proposed amendment doesn”t make sense.

“I don”t understand why this has come up in the first place. I am actually at a loss, thinking what exactly is the point of this. Unless they want to hold on to and have chosen to function the way they want… to have control over the media. We are a democratic country, our media is supposed to be free,” Benegal told PTI.

The veteran said when there”s already an existing system of the CBFC, there should be no outside control, especially by the government

Akshay Kumar was to begin shooting for Aanand L Rai ‘s film ‘Rakshabandhan’ in the first week of April. However, the actor tested positive around the same time, due to which the shoot was postponed. Then, just when he recovered, the second lockdown was put into place, resulting in further delay in the shooting of the film.

Now that the unlocking process has begun, ‘Rakshabandhan’ is top priority for the actor since Rs 8 crore set, that had been erected for the film’s April schedule, is still standing in the studio and an additional cost had to be incurred for a monsoon cover.

A source close to the development informs, “They have recreated the bylanes of Delhi and quite a few portions of the film will be shot on the set”. Director Aanand L Rai had earlier revealed that they will be shooting the film in a bio-bubble, making sure the crew members are stationed at one location, and actors are keeping themselves isolated once they go back home. They planned to maintain that till the shooting schedule of the film is complete.

However, FWICE President BN Tiwari adds, “Mumbai has moved to level one and therefore there is no reason for one to have a bio-bubble. Now producers are shooting normally, following the SOPs that were announced by the government.”

Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray are face to face regarding the proposed Noida Film City.  CM Yogi is on a tour of Mumbai today, where he will be meeting with the Investor of Film City.  CM Uddhav Thackeray is angry with Noida’s efforts to make a film city and is saying that he will not allow it to happen.
While speaking at the Indian Merchant of Chambers of Commerce yesterday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said yesterday that Maharashtra is a magnetic state.  Maharashtra continues to attract industrialists even today.  No industry in the state will go out, but industrialists from other states will also come to Maharashtra to set up industries.  The industries of the state will remain in the state.
CM Uddhav Thackeray said that it is a good thing to have competition, but if someone wants to take away by shouting and threatening, I will not let them happen.  Even today some people will come to meet you and say come to us.  Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had said without naming CM Yogi Adityayath, ‘If you have the strength then take out the industry here.’
At the same time, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that I saw that Yogi ji is sitting with Akshay Kumar in a 5 star hotel in Mumbai, perhaps Akshay ji may have carried a mango basket.  If someone talks about moving the Film City of Mumbai from here, first tell Yogi ji what is the condition of Noida Film City right now?
Meanwhile, MNS put posters in Marathi outside the five-star hotel in which CM Yogi Adityanath is in Mumbai.  In this poster, the proposed film city in Noida was targeted.  MNS called him a thug without naming CM Yogi Adityanath.

The news of how much Pavita likes Ijaz was found once again when in Friday’s episode, Pavitra said that if she gets eliminated, then the person inside the house that she will miss the most will be Ijaz.  It is known that Pavitra has been nominated this week and she said that if she goes home, she will not feel bad at all.
