The Delhi Police began removing barricades and concertina wires from the anti-farm laws protest site in Ghazipur, on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, on Friday.

Last year, multiple levels of iron and cement barricades, as well as at least five layers of concertina wires, were erected, and they were reinforced after the violence on January 26 this year, when farmers protested three problematic farm laws.

On Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Priyanka Kashyap said: “The process of removing barricades on NH-9 has been started. The temporarily barricading is being removed to ease out vehicular movement. However, the National Highway 24 was already opened for the traffic.”

Farmers in Haryana claim one person was hurt when a vehicle in a convoy transporting BJP MP Nayab Saini collided with a gathering of people protesting against the federal government’s farm rules.

The farmer who was injured was taken to a government hospital in Naraingarh, near Ambala, where the accident occurred. After being treated, he was freed and informed reporters that he was standing by the side of the road when he was knocked over by the vehicle that followed the MP.

Farmers have demanded that an FIR be made against the driver of the car, and have threatened to gherao, or surround, the police station on October 10 if this is not done.

Before Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lucknow, Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared a viral video of an SUV driving over farmers during a protest in the state’s Lakhimpur Kheri region.

Posing questions to the prime minister, Gandhi who was detained on Monday asked: “Have you seen this video? (She held a mobile phone showing a jeep running over a group of farmers, which Gandhi claimed is from Lakhimpur Kheri) Why hasn’t this man been arrested? Leaders like us who want to visit Lakhimpur Kheri have been put under custody without any FIR, I want to know why this man is free?”

BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday described farmers, who have been protesting against three farm laws, as “our own flesh and blood” and suggested that the government should re-engage with them in reaching common ground.

A large number of farmers are attending a mahapanchayat organised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) at the Government Inter College ground in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh

“Lakhs of farmers have gathered in protest today in Muzaffarnagar. They are our own flesh and blood. We need to start re-engaging with them in a respectful manner: understand their pain, their point of view and work with them in reaching common ground,” Mr Gandhi tweeted, posting a short video of the large crowd.

The mahapanchyat comes ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly polls next year.

The Centre had held talks with the protesting farmer unions but in vain as it did not agree to their demand of withdrawing the three farm laws.

The government has insisted that these Acts have given farmers new opportunity to sell their produce and rejected the criticism that they are aimed at doing away with the minimum support price regime and farm mandis.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday asked the Centre to repeal its three farm laws and apologise to farmers for the violence against them in Haryana’s Karnal.

“The manner in which farmers were attacked in Karnal of Haryana is condemnable. With such brutal actions, an atmosphere is being created to instigate farmers across the country,” Mr Gehlot tweeted.

Around 10 people were injured on Saturday as police allegedly lathi-charged a group of farmers disrupting traffic movement on a national highway while heading towards Karnal to protest against a BJP meeting.

Mr Gehlot said Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala are giving statements that do not make any sense.

He said the Haryana government officials are giving instructions for violent actions against farmers and the entire country is condemning the police lathi-charge at farmers but the Haryana government is taking no action against such officers.

“The Modi government should not test the farmers’ patience and immediately repeal the agricultural laws and apologise to the farmers,” Mr Gehlot said.

Enacted in September last year, the three farm laws have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell their products anywhere in the country.

The protesting farmers, however, have expressed fears that the legislation would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of Minimum Support Price and do away with the mandi system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates.

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait on Saturday once again warned the Centre over the three legislations against which the farmers are holding protests. He said that farmers know how to teach a lesson to people who ignore them.

“The Kisan Parliament has awakened the deaf and dumb government. The farmer also knows how to run Parliament and teach a lesson to those who neglect him in the village. Nobody should forget that,” Tikait, the spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), said in a tweet.

He also called on the farmers to be united “to save the soul and freedom of India”.

Tikait’s comments came on the third day of farmers’ protest near Parliament where monsoon session is being held. The sit-in, which the protesters call ‘Kisan Sansad’ began at Jantar Mantar on Thursday amid heavy security.

A group of 200 farmers reached Jantar Mantar in central Delhi on Thursday to protest against the Centre’s three controversial farm laws as the Monsoon session of Parliament was underway.

Police threw a ring of security around central Delhi and kept a tight vigil on the movement of vehicles.

The Delhi government and police on Wednesday agreed to allow farmers to hold the Kisan Sansad at Jantar Mantar from today till August 9 between 11 am and 5 pm.

The protesters have been asked to give an undertaking that all Covid norms would be followed and the protest would be peaceful, PTI reported.

This is the first time since the violence in the national capital during a tractor rally on January 26 that the authorities have given permission to protesting farmer unions to hold a protest in the city.

The Centre is recovering nearly Rs 3,000 crore which was transferred to over 42 lakh ineligible farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme, the government has told Parliament.

Under the PM-KISAN scheme, the Centre transfers Rs 6,000 each year to farmers across the country in three equal instalments. The scheme however has an eligibility criteria like the farmer should not be an income tax payee. In an answer to the Parliament on Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has admitted that Rs 2,992 crore is to be recovered from 42.16 lakh ineligible farmers who got money under the PM-KISAN scheme.

The maximum number of such ineligible farmers who got PM-KISAN money were in Assam (8.35 lakh) followed by Tamil Nadu (7.22 lakh), Punjab (5.62 lakh), Maharashtra (4.45 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (2.65 lakh) and Gujarat (2.36 lakh). The money to be recovered is to the tune of Rs 554 Cr in Assam, Rs 437 Cr in Punjab, Rs 358 Cr in Maharashtra, Rs 340 Cr in Tamil Nadu, Rs 258 Cr in UP and Rs 220 Cr in Gujarat, as per the reply in Parliament.
