The missiles were fired from a car in north Kabul, according to a security official who worked in the administration deposed by the Taliban two weeks ago. In the north, where the Hamid Karzai International Airport is located, smoke could be seen rising above buildings.

]]> Sweden said Friday it had ended its evacuations out of Kabul, after airlifting more than 1,100 people to Sweden in the wake of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

Those evacuated included embassy employees and their families, locally employed guards and their families, armed forces employees and 500 Swedes, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said.

In addition, Sweden also evacuated women’s rights activists, journalists and EU employees.

But Sweden was unable to evacuate all those on the so-called “Sweden list” of people seeking help to leave the country.

“The incredibly difficult and risky conditions meant we were not able to evacuate more Swedes and local employees,” Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde told reporters.

Both Linde and the head of Sweden’s Migration Board, Mikael Ribbenvik, said that even though the airlift had ended, the Scandinavian country would continue to try to help people associated with Sweden to leave the country.

]]> The Indian Air Force’s special repatriation flight, carrying 168 passengers, including 107 Indians, landed at the Hindon airbase near Delhi this morning. The Bangla Sahib Gurdwara will be the next stop for the evacuees. Many of the evacuees have been staying in a Gurdwara in Kabul for many days.

This evacuation came about a week after the last group of Indians, the workers of the Indian Embassy in Kabul, arrived in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Kabul. Among the evacuees were 24 Sikhs, including two Afghan senators.

Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara, three additional flights carrying Indians evacuated from Kabul, landed in the national capital earlier in the day from Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe and Qatar’s Doha. According to government sources, India has been granted permission to fly two aircraft per day from Kabul to remove its people stranded in Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s ‘capture’ of Indian citizens comes only hours after an Air Force transport plane successfully evacuated 85 Indians from Kabul.

]]> On Sunday, Greece’s second largest island was engulfed in fire , pillars of billowing smoke and ash turned the sky orange and encroached on villages, triggering more evacuation alerts. 

The fire on Evia, an island of forested mountains and canyons laced with small coves of crystalline water, began aug 3 and cut across the popular summer destination from coast to coast as it burned out of control. 

The blaze now is the most severe of dozens that broke out in Greece in the wake of the country’s most protracted heat wave in three decades, which sent temperatures soaring to 45 degrees celsius for days and created bone-dry conditions. 

Three patrol boats and a ferry were on standby at Peki to evacuate residents . 

Around 350 people already boarded the ferry and 23 people were picked up by coast guard as fire cut off many road-based escape routes.
