<p>In the past, Sitharaman has made her stance on cryptocurrency clear, saying that the government was not looking to shut all options and that people will be given adequate windows to experiment with blockchain, bitcoins and cryptocurrency.</p>
<p>In late July, Sitharaman <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/no-information-collected-on-number-of-crypto-exchanges-and-investors-in-india-finance-minister-nirmala-sitharaman-7232611.html" rel="nofollow">had informed Rajya Sabha</a> that the government does not collect information on the number of cryptocurrency exchanges and investors in India. She also said that the Finance Ministry has received no information on whether some of these exchanges are involved in narcotic drug trafficking or money laundering.</p>
<p>According to data from crypto exchanges, there are approximately 1.5 crore Indians who have invested in cryptocurrencies holding worth Rs 15,000 crore, with more and more people starting to invest. There are 350 startups that operate in the blockchain and crypto space.</p>

Continuous bad news has sent bitcoin in a downward direction since it hit an all-time high above $64,000 in April.</p>
<p>Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk had earlier commented on bitcoin, telling customers recently that the electric car giant will no longer accept bitcoin as payment for its vehicles because of concerns about the environmental impact of bitcoin mining, which is extremely energy intensive.</p>
<p>The bitcoin crash has carried over to other cryptocurrencies, too. Binance coin, XRP and Polkadot recorded heavy losses this month.</p>
<p>Bitcoin prices plummeted from their peak of $20,000 in December 2017 to below $3,500 by early 2019 before gradually going up.</p>

<p>The second largest cryptocurrency in the world, <strong>Ethereum (ETH)</strong>, has announced a new infrastructure model that will reduce its energy consumption by as much as <strong>99%</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Ethereum</strong> hopes to achieve this by substituting the proof of work system with the proof of stake system. <br /><br />At the present moment, this virtual currency has a carbon footprint that is comparable to Sri Lanka&#8217;s. Many people are sceptical and have raised concerns about the energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining. It may cause increased carbon emissions and climate change.</p>
