The post Delta variant spreading at a great speed in Colombo appeared first on The Edge Media.
]]>We have noticed that between 25-30 per cent of new cases reported from Colombo are of the Delta variant,” Herath said.
The health officials said that about 35 cases of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, have been found in Sri Lanka so far.
Sri Lanka is fighting the third wave of coronavirus. More than 1,000 new Covid-19 infections are recorded daily, in addition to nearly 50 deaths.

]]>Then why are TB cases increasing? Or, are TB cases in India actually on the rise? The government has said that TB case notifications in India decreased by about 25 per cent owing to “the impact of Covid-19-related restrictions” in 2020. “But special efforts are being made to mitigate this impact through intensified case finding in OPD settings as well as through active case finding campaigns in the community by all states,” the ministry said.
Like other post-covid infections, which are not new but are preying on the weakened immunity, TB can infect a person recovering from Covid as his or her immunity is weak at that time. “TB bacilli can be present in humans in a dormant state and has the potential to start multiplying when the individual’s immunity is compromised for any reason. The same is applicable in post-Covid scenario, when an individual may develop decreased immunity due to the virus itself or due to the treatment, especially immune-suppressants like steroids,” the ministry said.
The ministry also said that in 2020 only, it had recommended TB screening among Covid-19 patients as early as August 2020 and multiple such advisories have been issued.
“The dual morbidity of TB and Covid-19 can be further highlighted through the facts that both the diseases are known to be infectious and primarily attack the lungs, presenting similar symptoms of cough, fever and difficulty in breathing, although TB has a longer incubation period and a slower onset of disease,” the ministry said.

]]>The post Covid-19 pandemic is now in the “early stages” of the third wave : WHO appeared first on The Edge Media.
]]>According to a PTI report, Tanvee Gupta-Jain, chief economist of UBS Securities India, said the third wave risks are real even more now as economic activity has improved sequentially for the seventh successive week to July 12, with several states gradually easing curbs on movement. The UBS report further said the pace of vaccination has also slowed down to under 3.4 million doses per day as against four million jabs earlier along with 45 per cent of the daily Covid-19 case count being reported from the rural regions of India.
In a note on Wednesday, Jain said that although the number of daily Covid-19 cases seems to have plateaued, the same still remains much above the 2021 trough and the drop in active caseload has also started to narrow down.
The report added that in more than 20 per cent of the top districts accounting for most of the daily cases and where the second wave of Covid-19 has not yet dialled down, the third wave has already set firmly in. The figure was only 5 per cent even a month before, it said.
Meanwhile, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Wednesday said the Covid-19 pandemic is now in the “early stages” of the third wave. “The Delta variant is now in more than 111 countries and we expect it to soon be the dominant Covid-19 strain circulating worldwide, if it isn’t already,” an UN report quoted Ghebreyesus as saying.

]]>“She has been tested positive and under quarantine at her home. None of the family members have tested positive so far,” said Thrissur district medical officer K J Reena. She said re-infection is nothing new, and some of the health workers have been infected twice.
The student was found to have been reinfected after she was retested as she planned to travel to Delhi. Her family said she is showing no visible symptoms and that she has also been administered the first Covid-19 vaccine dose.
The student, who has been unable to return to China as Beijing is yet to allow Indian students back into the country because of the pandemic, spent almost a month in hospital while undergoing treatment for Covid-19 in 2020. Two of her friends, who travelled with her from Wuhan, the epicentre of the pandemic in China, were also later tested positive.
