For the second day in a row, India saw a dramatic decrease in daily new instances of COVID-19 infections. India reported a single-day increase of 27,254 coronavirus infections, bringing the total to 33,264,175, according to the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
Kerala had 20,240 COVID-19 cases and 67 deaths out of 27,254 new COVID-19 cases and 219 deaths reported in India in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
Active cases of COVID-19 infections decreased by about 10,652 throughout this time, to 3,74,269 currently. According to data posted at 8 a.m., the COVID-19-related death toll has risen to 44,28, 74, with 219 daily fatalities reported on Monday.

The Olympic Village, a complex of apartments and dining areas in Tokyo, will house 6,700 athletes and officials at its peak when the delayed 2020 Games finally get underway.
The Tokyo Games, which will be held largely behind closed doors to prevent infections, are unpopular in Japan where opinion polls have consistently demonstrated a lack of support.
Olympic officials have been at pains to play down the health risks of the Games, which are taking place in stringent anti-coronavirus conditions with athletes tested daily.
“Mingling and crossing of populations is very limited. We keep the risk to an absolute minimum level,” Olympic Games executive director Christophe Dubi said on Sunday.

]]>According to a PTI report, Tanvee Gupta-Jain, chief economist of UBS Securities India, said the third wave risks are real even more now as economic activity has improved sequentially for the seventh successive week to July 12, with several states gradually easing curbs on movement. The UBS report further said the pace of vaccination has also slowed down to under 3.4 million doses per day as against four million jabs earlier along with 45 per cent of the daily Covid-19 case count being reported from the rural regions of India.
In a note on Wednesday, Jain said that although the number of daily Covid-19 cases seems to have plateaued, the same still remains much above the 2021 trough and the drop in active caseload has also started to narrow down.
The report added that in more than 20 per cent of the top districts accounting for most of the daily cases and where the second wave of Covid-19 has not yet dialled down, the third wave has already set firmly in. The figure was only 5 per cent even a month before, it said.
Meanwhile, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Wednesday said the Covid-19 pandemic is now in the “early stages” of the third wave. “The Delta variant is now in more than 111 countries and we expect it to soon be the dominant Covid-19 strain circulating worldwide, if it isn’t already,” an UN report quoted Ghebreyesus as saying.

]]>Mr Sarma, who earlier this week took oath as Assam’s Chief Minister, visited the Guwahati Medical College Hospital at around 2:30 AM on Sunday and took stock of the Covid situation.
In a tweet, he wrote: “Managing critical patients at odd hours is always a challenge. At 2.30 am, I visited GMCH to see how #Covid patients are being given treatment in Emergency Ward at night. I was satisfied with the arrangements. I reiterate my gratitude to doctors & nursing staff for their help.”
Talking to reporters, Mr Sarma said, “We have already discussed odd-hour management where senior doctors have to do duty from 11 pm to 7 am. We have seen that maximum patients died during the night. Some of them came at night time in hospital and after two to three hours the patient died.”
Most of the seniors doctors do duty during the day shift. Now they have to do duty during the night also. CCTV cameras were fixed in every ward and we will monitor everything,” Mr Sarma said.
“We have an adequate amount of oxygen cylinders till now. No bed scarcity at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) but we will increase bed capacity and the process has been started at Sarusajai,” Mr Sarma said.
Meanwhile, the government has extended curfew timings in the state from 2 pm to 12 pm from Sunday.
“We have seen that Covid positive cases decreased from 1600 to 1000 in Guwahati after extending curfew timings. So, we have decided to extend curfew timings from 2 pm to 12 pm. We will monitor the positivity rate during one week,” said Chief Minister Sarma.

]]>A temporary 500-ICU bed facility has been set up at Delhi’s iconic Ram Leela Maidan to help accommodate critically ill Covid patients hit hard by the virulent second wave of infections. The massive facility was set up in just 15 days, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Starting Saturday, the hospital will be functional with 250 beds; the rest will be operational two days later, said Mr Kejriwal after visiting the facility today.
“I salute our docs, engineers and workers who worked round the clock on war footing and constructed these 500 ICU beds in just 15 days at Ramlila maidan opp LNJP hospital. 250 ICU beds start tomo and 250 in next two days.
The city recorded 8,500 fresh COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the first time the figure has dipped below 10,000 since April 10. The city’s test positivity rate has also dipped to 12 per cent, Mr Kejriwal said during a digital press conference.
Around 3,000 beds have cleared up in the past 10 days, he said, indicating that the second wave was easing in the city.
He said, however, that the number of patients in critical condition remains considerable because the ICU beds have not been freed up much.
