Following Elon Musk’s $44 billion buyouts of Twitter Inc., Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos offered a daring question: could this make things tough for Tesla Inc. in China? Bezos brought attention to Tesla’s tight relations with China, the world’s largest electric car market and home to the company’s first overseas facility, in a series of tweets. The year before, the Shanghai facility produced around half of the company’s worldwide cars, and Musk has indicated that number might quadruple this year.

After work hours, a spokesperson from Musk’s family office did not immediately reply to a request for comment. In just one of his first tweets following the take-private transaction, Musk defended free expression on the internet. Officials in China, meanwhile, have banned Twitter, as well as most other American social media platforms, due to concerns about the influence on public debate.

As the number of COVID-19 instances in China continues to rise, the Chinese government has issued stay-at-home restrictions to millions more residents in the country’s northeast regions. Following the highest rise in COVID cases since the pandemic’s original breakout in Wuhan two years ago, the government imposed harsh lockdown limitations on nearly 5 million individuals. With focused lockdowns, mass screening, and travel bans, the government has mostly held the virus at bay since its initial outbreak in 2020.

With the anticipated spread of the stealth Omicron variety, the country’s COVID curve is growing dramatically this time. China just reported its second virus-related fatality in over a year.

Ukraine urged an ‘immediate ceasefire’ at the fourth round of negotiations on Monday, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv’s diplomats were pressing for direct talks with Putin, according to news agency DW. The discussions were suspended on Monday and will resume on Tuesday, according to one of Ukraine’s negotiators. “The discussions have been put on hold until tomorrow due to a technical issue. In order to do extra work in the working subgroups and clarify specific definitions. Negotiations are still ongoing,” said Mykhailo Podolyak, a negotiator.

Likewise, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman has dismissed claims by US authorities that Russia requested military weaponry from Beijing for its operation in Ukraine as “disinformation.”

China is presently seeing its greatest epidemic of the virus in two years, while most nations across the globe open up and restart ‘regular life’ with a drop in Covid-19 infections. In just one day, on Sunday alone, the country recorded 3,100 new regionally transmitted infections, the largest number in two years. The Omicron strain has been blamed by certain local authorities for the increase in instances. As a result of the increase in incidents, millions of people in various areas of China are now living in constant fear.

According to an article in the South China Morning Post, some provincial health officials have ascribed the increase in cases in China to the Omicron strain, which is highly infectious but exhibits less serious symptoms than the initial Covid-19 virus.

On Saturday, a deadly ambush near the Myanmar border in Manipur killed five soldiers, including a colonel, his wife, and their eight-year-old son, bringing China’s possible support for insurgencies in India’s Northeast back into focus, and China watchers and security officials said the neighbor may be plotting to foment trouble in the region amid border tensions.

This isn’t the first time China’s ties to insurgency organizations have been questioned. Questions about Beijing’s involvement have been raised before, including in October 2020, when China’s propaganda machine warned India against signing a trade pact with Taiwan, claiming that Beijing could retaliate by supporting Northeast separatists and ceasing to recognize Sikkim as an Indian state.

It is considered as a strong warning to China, India successfully test-fired the Agni-5, a surface-to-surface ballistic missile that can accurately strike targets up to 5,000 kilometers away. At 7:50 p.m., Agni-5, an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), was launched from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.

The missile has a three-stage solid-fuel engine that allows it to hit targets with extreme precision. The successful Agni-5 test is consistent with India’s stated policy of “credible minimum deterrence,” which underscores the pledge to “No First Use.”

Along with submarine-based nuclear missiles, the missile represents the cornerstone of India’s nuclear deterrent, which had not previously been tested to anywhere near this range.

Beijing said it “firmly opposed” Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh last weekend, two days after India and China criticized each other for failing to make progress in talks over the military impasse on the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh. It asked New Delhi to “stop taking actions that would complicate and expand the boundary issue”.

Within hours, India’s Ministry of External Affairs slammed Beijing’s statement, claiming that Arunachal Pradesh is an “integral and inalienable part” of the country and that objecting to Indian politicians visiting a state “does not stand to reason.”

The crux of the issue is this: Australia originally desired conventionally powered submarines, and in 2016, they signed a contract with France. However, in terms of the threat from China, the security situation in the region has deteriorated dramatically since then.

Nuclear submarines are significantly more powerful than conventional submarines, as well as being stealthier, having a greater range, and being able to operate for longer periods underwater. And, to meet the challenge posed by the Chinese, who are mass-producing submarines and ships, there is no choice but to invest in better technology.

A negative RT-PCR result not older than 72 hours has been made mandatory for passengers from seven more countries, including, China and South Africa. The move comes after the discovery of a new Covid variant – C.1.2 – which could be more infectious and has shown signs of evading protection provided by vaccines.

While earlier this rule was only applicable for arrivals from the UK, Europe and Middle East, seven more countries – South Africa, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe – have been added to the list today, according to a latest guideline by Ministry of Health.

The new variant was first detected in South Africa in May. It has since been found in China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, England, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland. C.1.2. evolved from C.1., a lineage of the virus that dominated infections in the first wave of the virus in South Africa in mid-2020. It has between 44 and 59 mutations from the original virus detected in Wuhan in China.

As per the new guidelines, only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the flights from India and on arrival, they will again be tested for Covid through RT-PCR test.

The ministry has also asked the states to send a fixed percentage of samples of positive cases among international travellers for genome surveillance.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that India wants a solution to the border dispute with China through dialogue and asserted that the government would never allow the sanctity of borders to be violated. The Modi government has made it clear to the forces that any unilateral action on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) should not be ignored, he said.

Mr Singh was delivering virtually the third Balramji Dass Tandon Memorial Lecture organised by Panjab University on the issue of national security.

The defence minister said that there have been “perception differences” on the border with China.

Despite this, there are some agreements, protocols which the armies of both countries follow to conduct patrols,” he said. Referring to the clashes in eastern Ladakh last year, Mr Singh said Chinese forces had ignored the “agreed protocols.”

“We cannot allow the Chinese Army PLA to act on the LAC in a unilateral manner under any circumstances. That is what the Indian Army did that day in Galwan and bravely confronted the PLA soldiers and forced them to retreat,” he said while terming it as a “historic” incident.

India wants a solution to the border dispute with China through dialogue, the defence minister said and asserted that the government will never compromise on issues of the “country’s borders, its honour and self-respect”. “We will never allow the sanctity of borders to be violated,” he said.
