										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Congress choose Dalit-Sikh leader Charanjit Singh Channi as the new chief minister of Punjab on Sunday, after a day of frantic talks and back-and-forth. Captain Amarinder Singh, who resigned as chief minister on Saturday after months of strife within the state unit, would be replaced by Channi. Channi will be the first Dalit-Sikh chief minister in Punjab&#8217;s history.</p>
<p>Channi, who represents the Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency, is 58 years old. He is a member of the Dalit community, which makes up nearly a third of Punjab&#8217;s population. Channi was born in the village Makrona Kalan near Chamkaur Sahib on April 2, 1972, to S Harsa Singh and Ajmer Kaur.</p>

<p>Captain Amarinder advised Sidhu&#8217;s advisers to keep giving counsel to the PPCC president and not talk on subjects about which they plainly had little or no knowledge and had no comprehension of the repercussions of their comments, according to a news release released by the Chief Minister&#8217;s Office.</p>
<p>This was in response to Sidhu&#8217;s adviser Pyare Lal Garg&#8217;s recent questioning of the chief minister&#8217;s condemnation of Pakistan and another Sidhu aide, Malwinder Singh Mali&#8217;s earlier comments on Kashmir. Both have lately been recruited as advisers by Sidhu.</p>
