Fuel costs in India have been hiked for the first time in four months. The price of diesel and petrol has been increased by 80 paise. The country’s previous fuel price increase occurred in November. Home cooking gas (or LPG) would be Rs. 50 more. In Delhi, a gallon of petrol will now cost 96.21 rupees, while diesel will cost 87.47 rupees. In the country’s capital, a 14.2-kg non-subsidized LPG cylinder will now set you back Rs.949.50. The pricing of cooking gas was last updated in October.

Petrol and diesel prices in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, have risen to 110.82/liter and 95.00/liter, correspondingly. Fuel costs have also gone up in Chennai and Kolkata.

The current Chennai floods brought back nightmare memories of the city’s 2015 rain, with roads submerged, water invading homes, and lakes overflowing. Despite several guarantees that the city’s infrastructure will be improved to prevent another disaster like the one in 2015, the mismanagement of Chennai’s stormwater drains ensured that the commitment remained just on paper.

Several stormwater drains were seen overflowing, with outlets obstructed, including those that were recently completed. The delay in constructing stormwater drains is one of the reasons behind this. Several projects started by the previous AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu have stagnated for a variety of reasons.

Banned plastic was a big factor in the flooding that occurred in Chennai on Thursday. The local authority collected more than 180 tonnes of plastic debris and other solid waste in West Mambalam, where there were areas under knee-deep water, and water had already begun to flow through the canal.

An official said: “Several areas were inundated. Despite clearing the canal, water was not moving. Then every inlet of the canal was checked. We found a lot of plastic waste that had blocked the inlets now. As it rained, the water has carried the solid waste usually dumped on the roads, canal bunds, and tank bunds. Despite desilting, this solid waste caused several blockages.”

Etihad Airways will launch its flights from New Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru and Trivandrum from August 7 as the United Arab Emirates recently relaxed some travel restrictions from people travelling from India.

This does not mean that Indians will now be allowed to travel to Dubai, as the UAE government has not completely lifted the travel restriction on India.  UAE citizens and transit passengers from India are now allowed to travel to the UAE.

Last month, the national airways suspended all flights in India and said that suspension can extend till mid-August. But as the UAE revised its restrictions for people travelling from India, Etihad has resumed booking.

From August 10, the airline will add flights from three more Indian cities, and other cities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the carrier said in a statement. Flights from Ahmedabad (transit), Hyderabad, Mumbai, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Dhaka and Colombo will resume.

UAE residents, students and professionals working for UAE government agencies are now allowed to travel to the country. Indian students who want to transit through UAE airports for some other destination are also allowed now if they have negative PCR tests. In the wake of the second wave of the pandemic, the UAE imposed a strict ban on Indian travellers. Even UAE residents who have valid residential proof were stuck in India as the authorities imposed a blanket ban on anyone travelling from India. India, however, was not the only country. The UAE had banned passengers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc.

On August 5, the restrictions were relaxed and the UAE authorities decided to allow fully vaccinated UAE residents, travelling from India, healthcare workers, students, teachers, patients undergoing treatment in the UAE to travel from India. All passengers have to apply for permission to return through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship website.
