										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p dir="ltr">Chief Justice of India NV Ramana criticised the functioning of parliament in strong terms today, focussing not on disruptions but the cutting of corners when it comes to debates on the laws. Comparing it with earlier times when both houses of parliament were &#8220;full of lawyers&#8221;, he asked the legal fraternity to also contribute their time towards public service.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Calling the current situation &#8220;a sorry state of affairs&#8221;, he said there is &#8220;No proper debate&#8221; in the house.</p>
<p dir="ltr">&#8220;(There is) no clarity of laws. We do not know what the purpose of the law is. It is a loss to the public. This is when lawyers and intellectuals are not in the Houses,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">&#8220;If we look at our freedom fighters, many of them were also in the legal fraternity. The first members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were filled with lawyers&#8217; community,&#8221; Chief Justice Ramana said at an event to mark the Independence Day at the Supreme Court.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Unfortunate what you see now in the Houses&#8230; Debates back then in the Houses were very constructive. I saw the debates over financial bills and very constructive points were made. Laws were discussed and deliberated. One had a clear picture of the legislative part of the law,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">While the monsoon session of parliament started amid furore over the Pegasus spyware scam, the government had decided to push through several bills despite the disruptions. The opposition, which had been demanding a discussion on the allegations of spyware use on politicians, journalists and others, pointed out that the bills were passed without any discussion.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trinamool Congress&#8217;s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O&#8217;Brien compared it to &#8220;making papri chaat&#8221;, pointing out that the government was allotting only seven minutes to a bill on an average. The remark had become another flashpoint between the government and the opposition.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The government accused the opposition of &#8220;maligning the dignity of parliament&#8221; and conspiring to stop its functioning. The opposition parties accused the government of crushing their voice in parliament, &#8220;murdering&#8221; democracy and bringing &#8220;outsiders&#8221; as marshals to beat up MPs.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Yesterday, President Ram Nath Kovind alluded to the situation in parliament, saying &#8220;Our parliament is the temple of our democracy which provides us highest forum where we discuss, debate and decide issues for the well-being of our people&#8221;.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As the country celebrated its 75th Independence Day, Chief Justice Ramana also said It was a time to &#8220;review&#8221; the policies and achievements.</p>
<p dir="ltr">&#8220;75 years is not a small period in a country&#8217;s history. When we used to go to school they used to give us piece of jaggery and a small flag. Even though today we get so much we are not happy. Our saturation levels have reached the bottom,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I want to say to lawyers &#8211; do not confine yourselves to legal service. Do public service also. Contribute your knowledge and wisdom to this country also,&#8221; the Chief Justice added.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the same time, the maximum number of deaths in this period has been 1761, after which the total number of dead has increased to 1,80,530.&nbsp; The most worrying matter is that the number of active patients in the country has crossed the 20 lakh mark.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the Union Health Ministry, covid currently has 20,31,977 active in the country.&nbsp; That is, their treatment is either going on in the hospital or it is in home isolation on the instructions of the doctors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> Social media platforms Facebook and YouTube on Monday told the Bombay high court that they would block access to their websites to an AIMIM supporter, accused of posting inflammatory content aimed at creating communal unrest, if the Union government or the court so orders.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Madhav Jamdar was hearing a petition filed by Mumbai resident Imran Khan, seeking a direction to the police to take action against Abu Faizal for uploading incriminating hate speeches on social media.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The petitioner&#8217;s lawyer earlier said Faizal was a supporter of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e- Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). The plea sought deletion of videos uploaded by Faizal and also a permanent ban to be imposed on him from all social media websites. In May this year, the high court ordered YouTube and Facebook to delete the videos uploaded by Faizal.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Monday, Facebook&#8217;s counsel Darius Khambata and YouTube&#8217;s advocate Naresh Thacker informed the court that the videos uploaded by the user (Faizal) have been deleted. The petitioner&#8217;s advocate, Vivek Shukla, told the court that Faizal has uploaded videos even after his earlier clips were deleted.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;We (Facebook) can block access of the site to this user (Faizal) if the central government passes an order as per the procedure laid down under the Information Technology Act or if the court orders us to do so,&#8221; Khambata said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thacker, appearing for YouTube, conceded and said the URLs of the earlier videos uploaded by the user (Faizal) have been deleted. The bench sought to know from Shukla if the petitioner approached the nodal officer appointed by the government under the IT Act Section 69(A) (power to delete/block objectionable content posted online). &#8220;The IT Act has laid down a procedure by which any person can approach the nodal officer if he or she has a complaint against any content posted on the internet. Why should the court interfere and pass orders,&#8221; Chief Justice Datta said. The bench later reserved its order on the plea.</p>
