The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against Jai Anmol Anil Ambani, the son of industrialist Anil Ambani, and Reliance Home Finance Ltd. (RHFL) in connection with an alleged cheating case that led to a loss of Rs 228 crore for Union Bank of India.

According to officials,

The CBI’s action follows a complaint filed by the bank, formerly known as Andhra Bank, against RHFL, Jai Anmol Ambani, and Ravindra Sharad Sudhakar, both directors of the company.

The case revolves around the company obtaining credit limits amounting to Rs 450 crore from the bank’s SCF branch in Mumbai for business-related needs. The bank had set specific conditions for the loan, including maintaining financial discipline, timely repayment of the principal, servicing interest, and providing relevant documentation such as security positions and sale proceeds routing through the bank.

However, the company failed to meet these obligations, leading to the account being classified as a non-performing asset (NPA) on September 30, 2019.

A forensic audit conducted by Grant Thornton, covering the period from April 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019, revealed that the borrowed funds were misused and diverted for purposes other than those for which the finance was originally extended.

The bank has accused the individuals involved, including the promoters and directors of RHFL, of committing fraudulent misappropriation of funds, manipulating accounts, and breaching their fiduciary duties by diverting the loan amount for personal or unrelated uses, rather than for the intended business purposes. This alleged breach of trust and fund misappropriation has caused significant financial damage to the bank.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, a fugitive carrying a reward of 10 lakh rupees, for his alleged involvement in the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed, the daughter of the then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. According to investigators, he is suspected of being part of a conspiracy formed by members of the banned Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front.

Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, a fugitive arrested by CBI, carrying a reward of 10 lakh rupees, for his alleged involvement in the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed.

Shangloo, described as a close associate of JKLF chief Yasin Malik, had been wanted for more than three decades. The CBI stated that he conspired with Malik and others under various provisions of the Ranbir Penal Code and the TADA Act. The agency confirmed that he will be produced before the TADA Court in Jammu as required by law.

Officials revealed that Shangloo had allegedly served in an organisational role within the banned group and was responsible for managing its finances. He was taken into custody from his residence in the Nishat area of Srinagar during an operation conducted jointly by the CBI and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Rubaiyya Sayeed was abducted near Srinagar’s Lal Ded Hospital on December 8, 1989. She was released five days later after the V. P. Singh–led central government, supported by the BJP, freed five militants in exchange.

Yasin Malik, currently imprisoned in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in a terror financing case, attends court hearings through video conferencing due to restrictions imposed on his movement by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Eyewitnesses, including Rubaiyya Sayeed herself, have identified him in connection with the kidnapping.

Rubaiyya Sayeed was abducted near Lal Ded Hospital in Srinagar on December 8, 1989, and was released 05 days later after the central government led by V P Singh, with BJP support, freed 05 militants in exchange. She is now living in Tamil Nadu and has been listed by the CBI as a prosecution witness since the agency took over the case in 1990.

Malik, aged fifty six, was convicted by a special NIA court in May last year. He had been arrested in early 2019 for a 2017 terror financing case filed by the National Investigation Agency.

To speed up the trial process, the CBI appointed its senior counsel, Monika Kohli, as the chief prosecutor after charges were framed against Malik in cases involving both the kidnapping and the killing of four IAF personnel in Srinagar over 30 years ago.

Kohli, who has represented the CBI in the High Court for a decade, successfully opposed Malik’s bail pleas in the major cases that occurred during the early years of militancy in Kashmir. A special TADA court has already framed charges against Malik and nine other accused individuals in the kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed.

New Delhi | A Delhi court has formally framed charges against former Railway Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and their son Tejashwi Yadav in the high-profile IRCTC land-for-hotel scam. The order comes just four weeks before the Bihar assembly elections, which are scheduled in two phases on November 6 and 11, with results on November 14.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne, in a detailed 244-page order, observed that there is substantial suspicion that Lalu Yadav was the key conspirator behind the scam. The court charged the trio, along with 11 others, under serious offenses including criminal conspiracy, fraud, abuse of official position and misconduct by a public servant. The court has scheduled daily hearings starting from October 27

Allegations Against the Yadav Family

According to the court’s findings, Lalu Prasad Yadav, during his tenure as Railway Minister, is alleged to have conspired with Sujata Hotels’ directors Bijay and Vinay Kochhar to manipulate the tendering process related to IRCTC hotels in Ranchi and Puri.

The Kochhar brothers allegedly transferred a valuable plot of land in Patna to a company linked to Lalu’s close aide Prem Chand Gupta. That company eventually came under the control of the Yadav family, and the land was officially transferred to them at a highly undervalued rate.

The judge noted that the evidence points toward serious doubts about Lalu’s role in skewing the tender process for personal gain, resulting in loss to the exchequer and undue benefits to his family.

Court Rejects Political Motive Argument

The defense had argued that the case was politically motivated, especially as it has resurfaced just before elections. However, the court dismissed the claim, stating that political motivation cannot be used as a blanket defense. It also added that if today’s investigation is being labeled as politically driven, it could equally be argued that the earlier closure of the case was politically influenced.

“The court does not accept the argument of political vendetta,” the judge said.

Tejashwi Yadav Calls It Political Vendetta

In response to the court’s decision, Tejashwi Yadav maintained that the case is part of a **“political witch hunt.”** He stated:

“This is clearly a case of revenge politics. As elections approach, such cases are deliberately brought up. We respect the judiciary and will fight the case legally and politically.”

BJP Responds: “This Is the RJD Model

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized the RJD, alleging that the party has a history of corruption.

“Taking land from the poor in exchange for job promises, manipulating contracts, and engaging in massive scams like fodder and bitumen — this is the governance model under the RJD,” he said.

Conclusion

As the case progresses, it’s poised to play a significant role in the political discourse ahead of the Bihar elections. The trial’s timing — starting just as campaigns heat up — ensures it will remain in the spotlight, with potential implications for both legal accountability and political fortunes.

The Central Bureau of Investigation should be an autonomous body reporting only to parliament, the Madras High Court said on Tuesday. Batting for the autonomy and independence of the central agency, which according to the opposition has become a political tool in the hands of the BJP-led Central government, the court said: “The CBI should have autonomy as that of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, who is only accountable to Parliament”.

In its 12-point instructions overhauling the current system, the court said, “This order is an attempt to release the “Caged Parrot (CBI)”.

A “caged parrot” was how the Supreme Court had described the agency during a hearing of the Coalfield allocation cases in 2013. That time, the BJP, which was in the opposition, accused the agency of being controlled by the Congress-led government.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a Maharashtra government plea against a CBI probe into Anil Deshmukh, the ex-Home Minister who faces corruption allegations.

The top court underlined its displeasure, saying the state’s filing of the petition made it seem like it is trying to protect Mr Deshmukh. The state should be ready for any probe to ensure “purity in administration”, a two member-bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah said

The Maharashtra government had moved the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order that allowed the CBI, or Central Bureau of Investigation, to proceed with its inquires against NCP leader Anil Deshmukh, whose party is part of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi in the state.

The petition was filed days after the CBI moved the Bombay High Court to say the Maharashtra government was refusing to share documents needed to advance the investigation.

The Maharashtra government had said that since it planned to approach the Supreme Court, it would not share the requested documents with the CBI, the agency had told the court.

New Delhi: The allegation of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh (former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh) accruing Rs 100 crore every month has been termed as serious by the Supreme Court.  On Thursday, the Bombay High Court ordered the CBI inquiry, what is wrong in it, should such cases not be investigated by an independent investigating agency.  The court refused to restrain or interfere in the investigation, saying that the CBI probe against Anil Deshmukh would continue. Earlier, during the hearing in the Supreme Court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of Deshmukh and the Maharashtra government,  Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi also strongly advocated.  Sibal argued that an inquiry was ordered based on oral allegations.  Where is the evidence in this case.
The case was heard in front of the bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Hemant Gupta.  The Supreme Court said, we are not willing to interfere in this matter.  The court said that this is a matter of public trust. The investigation of the incidents by independent agency is necessary.  The Supreme Court made it clear that there are big figures involved in the allegations and the nature of the allegations is serious.  Therefore, an independent inquiry is necessary and both the petitions are dismissed.

The Central Bureau of Investigation questioned late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s psychiatrist Susan Walker for the first time on Thursday in connection with the film star’s death, an official said.

The probe agency also questioned actress Rhea Chakraborty’s father for the third consecutive day, he said.

Rajput’s psychiatrist Susan Walker reached the DRDO guest house in suburban Kalina, where the probe team is stationed, around 1 pm and left the place around 8 pm. She was questioned for the first time,”

Said CBI Official

According to the official, Rhea Chakraborty’s father Indrajeet Chakraborty arrived at the guest house around 10.30 am in a car escorted by a police vehicle.

“It was his third day of questioning, which lasted for around five hours. He left the place around 3.30 pm,” he added.

Rhea Chakraborty and her family members are accused of abetting the suicide of Rajput, 34, who was found hanging in his flat in Mumbai’s Bandra area on June 14.

In the last two days, the 28-year-old actress’s father was questioned for over 18 hours by the CBI. The actress, who was earlier questioned for around 35 hours over four days, and her brother Showik Chakraborty, who was also grilled by the CBI, were not questioned on Thursday.

However, the probe team quizzed Rajput’s flatmate Siddharth Pithani and domestic help Deepesh Sawant during the day, the official said. After Rajput’s demise, the Mumbai Police registered a case of accidental death and recorded statements of over 50 people.

The late actor’s father subsequently filed a police complaint in Patna, accusing Rhea Chakraborty and her family of abetting his suicide and misappropriating his money.

The Supreme Court last month upheld the transfer of the FIR lodged in Patna to the CBI.

On Wednesday, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said it has arrested two alleged contraband dealers in connection with the drugs trafficking case linked to the case of Rajput’s death.

The role of Rhea Chakraborty’s brother and his purported links with people nabbed by NCB are under the scanner of the agency and he is expected to be summoned for questioning soon, officials said.   — PTI
