]]> The World Rally championship event in Japan, which was due to take place in mid-November, has been cancelled because of continuing problems with the coronavirus pandemic, the organisers announced on Tuesday. “Considering the characteristics of the WRC competition, which is held on public roads with the imperative co-operation of all in the local community, and the fact that in Japan the COVID-19 emergency cases continue to increase daily and alleviation of the situation remains unpredictable, together we were left with only one choice which was to, unfortunately, call off the 2021 WRC Rally Japan,” the organisers said in a statement.

It is the second successive year that organisers have had to cancel the Rally Japan which was due to appear last year for the first time since 2010.

Rally Japan was inked in as the 12th and final event of the championship calendar and the WRC said it would announce a replacement event shortly to conclude the season.

After eight rallies, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier (Toyota) leads the drivers’ standings, 38 points ahead of his British teammate Elfyn Evans and Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai).

Among manufacturers, Toyota is 41 points ahead of Hyundai.

After the Acropolis Rally in Greece which runs this week from Thursday to Sunday, two other events remain on the calendar, in Finland (October 1-3) and Spain (October 14-17).

These flights will divert to Doha or UAE and after refuelling fly to Delhi. Due to airspace closure, Air India had to cancel its Delhi-Kabul-Delhi flight that was supposed to operate on Monday. Vistara says it has stopped overflying Afghan airspace on its Delhi-London flights.

This closure will mean all flights between Delhi and the west, will have to take a longer alternate routes. Many other international flights flying between the east and the west will also be affected.

As the airspace restrictions kicked in, Air India’s Chicago-Delhi was enroute. It took a U-turn just before the Afghan airspace and is now diverting to Doha/UAE for refuelling before continuing its journey to Delhi. A Terra Avia Baku-Delhi also changed course enroute for the same reason.

This happened late Monday morning (India time) when the Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority (ACAA) issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) advising transit aircraft to reroute. The NOTAM added that Kabul airspace had been released to the military. ACAA said any transit through Kabul airspace — which covers all of Afghanistan — would be uncontrolled.

“Afghan airspace has been declared uncontrolled. Due to that the Kabul flight had to be cancelled. We are working out alternate routes for another affected flights that needed to overly Afghanistan,” said an AI official.

A Vistara spokesperson said: “We have stopped using Afghanistan airspace and are taking an alternate route for our flights to and from London Heathrow. We are closely working with the relevant authorities to monitor and assess the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of our passengers, staff and aircraft.”

“Air India flight 244 Kabul-Delhi on August 16, 2021, stands cancelled,” a passenger who was booked to fly back to Delhi on this flight got this message on Monday while at Kabul airport. The Airbus A320 was fully booked on the return flight to Delhi, with 33 passengers from Monday’s flight who could not reach the airport.

Thousands of people are gathered at Kabul airport, including on the tarmac to fly out of the country. Troops guarding the airport had to fire in air several times to disperse the crowds.

Afghan airspace closure will mean flights between the east and the west, and north India and the west, will have to take longer routes. Airlines have prepared alternate for this scenario long time back.

]]> Gujarat’s Tarnetar fair, which attracts a large number of tourists from across India and abroad, will not be held for the second year in a row this year due to the coronavirus situation, a senior official said on Saturday.

The annual fair at the Trinetreshwar Mahadev temple in Tarnetar village is held annually for three days in August-September.

“But it has been cancelled this year as well due to the prevailing pandemic situation and the Gujarat government’s latest COVID-19 notification that prohibits gathering of more than 400 people in a public programme,” Surendranagar district collector A K Aurangabadkar said.

The state notification allows all temples to remain open for prayers and other rituals, but devotees will have to follow the COVID-19 norms, he said.

“It has also been decided that Tarnetar fair will not be allowed to be held this year due to the coronavirus situation. But devotees can visit the temple to offer prayers,” he said, adding that the fair was cancelled last year as well due to the pandemic.

Devotees and tourists turn up in large numbers to take part in the fair, which has been described as a “celebration of ethnic Gujarat’s folk-dance, music, costumes and the arts, centered around young tribal men and women seeking marriage partners” as described by the state tourism department on its official website.

In its latest notification issued on Friday, the state government has allowed all religious, social, educational, cultural and political functions to be organised with no more than 400 participants on an open ground, and with half its capacity in an enclosed area with the numbers not exceeding 400.

Although the number of daily infection cases has dropped significantly in Gujarat, the government has said that it was alert in view of the possible third wave of the pandemic.
