Several Indian states have declared it an epidemic and a notifiable disease. The states that have done so are Telangana, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Haryana among others.

]]>The government is making several endeavors for the domestic availability of the drug. The Ministry said that India is importing 3,63,000 vials of Amphotericin-B drug in May, which will give a totally of 5,26,752 vials in the country. The number of vials also constitute of the domestic production. It also adds that the government will import 3,15,000 vials in June and with the domestic produce, the total tally of vials would reach to 5,70,114 in the month of June.
Various states and territories have reported a rapid increase in the cases of Black Fungus. Many states also made a request to declare it as a pandemic as it has already taken many lives. The states have also reported a shortage of the drug for treating the disease.
The Union Ministry in partnership with the Department of Pharmaceuticals and Ministry of External Affairs are making joint efforts for the domestic production of the drugs. The five manufacturers given license to produce the drug are- NATCO Pharmaceuticals, Hyderabad; Alembic Pharmaceuticals, Vadodara; Gufic Biosciences Ltd., Gujarat; Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Pune and Lyka inn Gujarat. Currently, there are only five manufacturers of the drug. These are, Bharat Serums and Vaccines Ltd., BDR Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Sun Pharma Ltd, Cipla Ltd, Life Care Innovations and Mylan Labs (importer).

]]>Just yesterday, 19th May the Governement of Rajasthan had declared it as an epidemic and today comes in reports from Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, 1500 cases have been reported so far and 90 people have lost their lives to it. The state Public Health Minister, Rajesh Tope has warned against indiscriminate use of steroids in the treatment of covid. “It is serious it should not be taken lightly”, he added.
Other than Rajasthan and Maharasthra, there are minor cases in other states too. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chattisgarh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh are among the other infected states.

]]>He told the reporters,”So far, 90 people have died due to mucormycosis in Maharashtra. It is serious… It should not be taken lightly. Indiscrimate use of steroids to treat COVID patients should be avoided”.
Mr. Tope said that the factors like severe diabetes and suppression of the immune system also leads to catching the virus. The medical experts say that steroids are also a major factor in spreading of the virus.
Mr. Tope added,”The Maharashtra government is prepared to tackle it and has prepared nine-page guidelines for doctors who treat mucormycosis patients. The guidelines also suggest preventive measures such as use of sterilised and distilled water in humidifiers of oxygen supplying machines (in Covid-19 wards)”.
As compared to the first wave, the cases of Black Fungus has rapidly increased in the second wave.

On Monday, 17th May the state government had issued orders to purchase 2,500 vials of a drug used in the treatment of black fungus according to the Health Minister, Raghu Sharma. The drug is currently in short supply. Principal Health Secretary, Akhil Arora said that steps were taken to ensure coordinated and integrated treatmnent of black fungus and coronavirus.
As per Union Health Ministry, people catch the fungus through cuts, burns or other skin traumas when they come in contact with the fungal spores in the environment.
So far the states affected by black fungus are Karnataka, Uttrakhand, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Bihar.

]]>The Prime Minister was interacting with a Group of Doctors via video conferencing from beyond the country. He praised the doctors for forming teams and providing telemedicine to the villages.
He said,”Doctors across the states should form similar teams, train final year MBBS students and MBBS interns, and work towards ensuring that all tehsils and districts of the country have telemedicine service”.
Mr. Modi also talked over the challenges of Black Fungus and asked the doctors to put some extra efforts. Doctors made him aware about their preparedness on the issue. Prime Minister will also communicate with field officials on Tuesday from various states and districts to discuss about their experience in handling the pandemic. These officials will be from Karnataka, Bihar, Assam, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, MP, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.
