<div>Mucormycosis or black fungus is a fungal infection caused by exposure to mucor mould which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables. Amphotericin-B, an anti-fungal drug is being used for the treatment of the black fungus disease.</div>

<div>The Union Health Ministry, on May 20, urged the states to make mucormycosis, a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.</div>

<div> The central government has made it mandatory for states to report both suspected and confirmed cases of mucormycosis to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).</div>

<div>Cases of black fungus infection are being reported in several parts of the country. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have already declared it a &#8216;notifiable&#8217; disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, thereby making it mandatory to report every Mucormycosis case to the state government.</div>

As Covid continues to claim lives in it&#8217;s second wave, Black Fungus or Mucormycosis on the other hand is growing at a rapid pace too. The experts are of the opinion that Black Fungus is affecting people recovering/ recovered from covid. The doctors have also noted that compared to the first wave of Covid there are more cases of black fungus in the second.</p>
<p>Just yesterday, 19th May the Governement of Rajasthan had declared it as an epidemic and today comes in reports from Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, 1500 cases have been reported so far and 90 people have lost their lives to it. The state Public Health Minister, Rajesh Tope has warned against indiscriminate use of steroids in the treatment of covid. &#8220;It is serious it should not be taken lightly&#8221;, he added.</p>
<p>Other than Rajasthan and Maharasthra, there are minor cases in other states too. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chattisgarh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh are among the other infected states.</p>
