A major political controversy erupted in Parliament after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was pushed and obstructed by members of the ruling party inside the Parliament premises. The incident occurred during a tense standoff between opposition and treasury bench lawmakers, further escalating the already charged atmosphere in the House.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that he was trying to enter the Parliament building when several MPs from the ruling alliance blocked his path and shoved him. He said the act was deliberate and aimed at preventing the opposition from raising its concerns inside the House. According to him, such behavior undermines democratic values and reflects intolerance towards dissent.

The government strongly denied the allegations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissed the claims and accused Rahul Gandhi of misleading the nation. He stated that the opposition leader was not attacked and instead accused Congress MPs of violating parliamentary norms and creating disorder. Shah added that the government respects parliamentary traditions and would not resort to such conduct.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur also rejected the allegations, saying the opposition was attempting to divert attention from its own actions. He accused Congress MPs of breaching security protocols and engaging in unruly behavior within the Parliament complex.

The incident led to sharp exchanges between both sides, with opposition parties demanding accountability and protection for elected representatives. The ruling party maintained that the opposition was politicising routine movement inside Parliament to gain sympathy.

The confrontation has further deepened the political divide and added to the series of disruptions that have affected parliamentary proceedings in recent sessions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Uttar Pradesh Diwas said that the state firmly belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party and called upon the people to once again give the party a strong mandate. Addressing a programme in Lucknow, Shah said Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a growth engine for the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the state.

He stated that since 2014, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a transformation in governance, law and order, infrastructure and public welfare. According to Shah, the development model implemented by the Modi government at the national level and the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has become a benchmark for the entire country.

The Home Minister said that Uttar Pradesh is no longer known for instability and poor administration, but for rapid development, improved security and strong governance. He added that initiatives taken by the state government have strengthened the confidence of investors and created new employment opportunities, especially for the youth.

He expressed confidence that with continued public support, Uttar Pradesh will remain on the path of progress and help India achieve its long term goals.

The chaotic scenes at Lionel Messi’s event at Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday triggered sharp political reactions in West Bengal, with the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition parties launching strong attacks on the organisers and the state government. The much-anticipated programme descended into disorder after angry spectators vandalised parts of the stadium, alleging that they were denied a proper view of the global football icon despite paying hefty ticket prices.

Trinamool Congress spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh demanded immediate action against the organisers, blaming their “overzealousness” and the presence of people crowding Messi to take selfies. He said this deprived spectators seated in the galleries of a clear view, leading to widespread frustration and anger.

Questioning the planning behind the event, Ghosh said the chaos forced Messi to leave the stadium prematurely and also prevented West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from attending the programme and formally welcoming him on behalf of the state. Calling the episode a major disappointment for sports lovers, he recalled Messi’s 2011 visit to Kolkata, saying the earlier event was well-organised and showcased the city in a positive light.

The Bharatiya Janata Party blamed the state government for the mess. BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya alleged that “fraudsters driven by greed” created the situation to make money. He accused Trinamool Congress leaders of backing self-promoting organisers who deprived genuine ticket holders of a proper glimpse of the football icon, thereby damaging the image of the state.

Union minister and senior BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar also criticised the Trinamool Congress and the state administration, holding them responsible for the breakdown of law and order during the high-profile event.

Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, launched a scathing attack on the government, alleging that ministers and leaders “clung to Messi like leeches” while fans who spent thousands of rupees were left watching the footballer briefly on giant screens. In a post on X, Adhikari accused Sports Minister Arup Biswas, Fire Minister Sujit Basu and the organisers of turning the programme into a money-making exercise. He demanded a full refund for gallery ticket holders, the arrest of those responsible and the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging the incident embarrassed West Bengal globally.

The Congress also joined the criticism. West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar described the episode as a case of terrible mismanagement and a mockery of law and order. He alleged that tickets were sold at exorbitant prices in Messi’s name while the footballer was surrounded only by Trinamool Congress leaders and their family members. Sarkar further claimed that crores of public money were spent for photo opportunities, calling it a new-age scam, and demanded accountability from the organisers, ministers, police officials and the local MLA.

Congress spokesperson Suman Roy Chaudhuri echoed similar concerns, questioning the role of the police administration and demanding legal action. He alleged that the incident exposed what he termed the commercial face of the government.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also criticised the handling of the event. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty termed the mismanagement a “black day” for West Bengal, blaming the Trinamool Congress government for failure of law and order. Drawing a comparison with the visits of football legend Diego Maradona during the Left Front regime, he alleged that profit-making took precedence over spectator safety and experience during Messi’s visit.

“This is the beauty of democracy. The people’s verdict must be accepted….”, Tharoor said.

In a post on social media platform X, Tharoor said,

“The mandate delivered by voters deserved respect, whether it favoured the UDF across the state or the BJP in the state capital. He noted that the results reflected a vibrant democratic spirit in Kerala.”

Calling the outcome a day of remarkable electoral results, Tharoor congratulated the UDF on its impressive victories in multiple local bodies.

He said,

“The performance was a clear endorsement from voters and a strong signal ahead of the upcoming state Assembly elections.”

According to him,

“Sustained effort, a clear political message, and prevailing anti-incumbency sentiments contributed to the improved showing compared to the 2020 local body polls”

At the same time, Tharoor acknowledged the BJP’s breakthrough in Thiruvananthapuram. He offered his congratulations for what he termed a significant victory in the city corporation, describing it as a notable shift in the political landscape of the state capital.

The Congress leader said he had campaigned for change after what he described as 45 years of Left Democratic Front misrule, but ultimately the electorate chose another party that also promised a clear alternative in governance.

Tharoor said,

“This is the beauty of democracy. The people’s verdict must be accepted, whether it supports the UDF statewide or the BJP in my constituency”.

Reaffirming his commitment to public service, Tharoor, the Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, said he would continue working for the welfare of Kerala, advocating for the people’s concerns and upholding the principles of good governance.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday launched a blistering attack on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh, calling it “NRC in disguise” and accusing the BJP and the Election Commission of plotting to selectively delete voters who do not support the ruling party.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Hyderabad, Yadav claimed that more than three crore voters in Uttar Pradesh are at risk of being struck off the rolls. He said the Election Commission should be working to increase voter participation rather than overseeing what he described as “large-scale deletions that threaten the very foundation of democracy.”

“If votes are removed in areas where the BJP has lost, it is nothing less than a conspiracy against democracy,” Yadav said. “This is not the purpose of SIR. This is NRC brought in quietly. They could not implement NRC openly, so they have introduced it under another name.”

Drawing parallels with the National Register of Citizens, Yadav argued that the documentation being sought during the SIR mirrors the same requirements associated with NRC. “If NRC were to be implemented, what documents would people need to show? The same documents are being demanded now,” he alleged.

Yadav also compared the SIR exercise to past policy decisions that, according to him, caused widespread hardship. “People are being troubled again, just like during demonetisation, the COVID period, and the rollout of GST,” he said.

During his Hyderabad visit, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister attended the Vision India – AI Summit, underscoring the growing influence of artificial intelligence across sectors such as agriculture and healthcare. He said the initiative was aimed at shaping a roadmap for “Neo-India” driven by foresight rather than polarisation. “Politics should be about vision, not division,” he remarked.

On the ongoing Parliament Winter Session, Yadav took a sharp dig at the ruling dispensation, saying the most striking feature was that “some people who never sang Vande Mataram are suddenly eager to do so.”

Yadav also held meetings with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and senior leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, including working president K T Rama Rao. According to an official release, Reddy briefed him on the state government’s development and welfare initiatives.

The Samajwadi Party chief praised the Telangana government’s decision to recognise ‘Sadar’, a festival celebrated by the Yadav community in Hyderabad, as a state festival, calling it a gesture of social inclusion and cultural respect

Both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the organisers of Lionel Messi’s event at Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday after the programme descended into chaos, with angry spectators resorting to vandalism when they failed to get a proper view of the football legend.

The disorder erupted inside the stadium as disappointed fans, many of whom had paid large sums for tickets, protested what they described as mismanagement and lack of planning. The situation escalated when spectators realised that crowding around Messi by organisers and their associates had blocked the gallery view.

Mamata Banerjee Apologises to Lionel Messi After Chaos at Kolkata Event; Orders Probe into Mismanagement | Asianet Newsable

Demanding action against those responsible, Trinamool Congress spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the organisers’ ‘overzealous’ attempts to surround Messi and take selfies prevented genuine spectators from seeing the star, triggering widespread anger. He questioned why no strict action had been initiated despite the scale of the disruption.

Ghosh said the chaos forced Messi to leave the stadium early and also prevented West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from attending the event and welcoming him on behalf of the state. Calling the incident a major disappointment for sports lovers, he contrasted it with Messi’s earlier visit in 2011, which he recalled as being efficiently organised and widely praised.

The Bharatiya Janata Party echoed the criticism but, placed the blame squarely on the state government. BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya alleged that the situation was created by ‘fraudsters driven by greed’ who prioritised profit and publicity over proper arrangements for fans.

Bhattacharya further accused Trinamool Congress leaders of backing organisers focused on self-promotion, which, he claimed, deprived ticket-buying spectators of a clear view of the football icon. He said the episode had damaged West Bengal’s reputation.

Union Minister and senior BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar also condemned the Trinamool Congress and the state administration, holding them responsible for the mismanagement and chaos at the high-profile event.

Political tensions in West Bengal intensified on Thursday as posters surfaced across Salt Lake announcing plans to build a Ram temple complex on the eastern edge of the metropolis. The posters stated that the project would include a school, hospital, old age home, and additional welfare facilities.

Symbolic Photo

They were attributed to BJP leader and former local unit president Sanjay Poyra and were seen in areas such as City Centre, Karunamoyee, and other prominent sections of Bidhannagar.

The posters declared that a Ram temple similar to the Ayodhya structure would be constructed on a four bigha plot and invited local residents to contribute Re 1 each towards the initiative. This development follows the recent foundation laying of a Babri Masjid styled mosque by suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir in Rejinagar, Murshidabad, on December 6, the anniversary of the 1992 demolition. The event was held under tight security.

On the same day, the BJP organised a separate ceremony in Manindra Nagar of Banjatiya, also in Murshidabad, where groundwork for a Ram temple was initiated. Local leaders used the occasion to criticise Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for what they described as appeasement politics. With Salt Lake entering the political arena, the confrontation has moved closer to the administrative hub of the state, intensifying the symbolic significance of the ongoing contest.

Speaking to reporters, Poyra described the temple initiative as a social and spiritual movement inspired by the concept of Ram Rajya.

Fiery scenes unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after the Opposition walked out during Home Minister Amit Shah’s address on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, sparking a series of sharp exchanges between both sides of the House.

Shah criticised the Opposition for what he described as a lack of willingness to engage on major national concerns, accusing them of “wasting Parliament’s time”. He alleged that their objections to the SIR exercise stemmed from an intention to “retain illegal immigrants on voter lists”.

He warned that opposing the SIR initiative would politically harm the Opposition in states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, reiterating the NDA’s stance of “detect, delete and deport illegal immigrants”. Shah asserted that the BJP’s prospects in West Bengal would be “assured” if the Trinamool Congress continued resisting the revision exercise.

The situation escalated further when Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi challenged Shah to debate him on allegations he had raised in three recent press conferences, claiming that the BJP, with the support of the Election Commission, was involved in “vote theft”.

Gandhi questioned why election commissioners were granted complete immunity, demanding that the home minister clarify the rationale behind such protections. He argued that Shah’s response appeared “defensive”, saying it suggested the minister was “shaken and afraid”.

Shah countered that he would not alter the structure or order of his speech based on the LoP’s demands. His remarks triggered repeated interruptions from both government and Opposition benches, ultimately culminating in the walkout.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra responded to the BJP’s criticism of Rahul Gandhi’s planned visit to Germany, questioning why the opposition party is targeting the Leader of Opposition (LoP) while Prime Minister Narendra Modi regularly spends a significant amount of his working hours abroad.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Germany from December 15 to 20, where he will interact with the Indian diaspora and hold discussions with German ministers, according to the Indian Overseas Congress.

The BJP criticized Rahul Gandhi over the trip, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla mocking his foreign visit on social media. Poonawalla remarked, “Once again Videsh Nayak is doing what he does best—going for a foreign tour! Parliament will be in session until December 19, but reports suggest Rahul Gandhi will be in Germany from December 15 to 20. Rahul is LoP — leader of Paryatan (tourism).”

He further recalled that during the Bihar elections, Gandhi was also abroad and later went on a jungle safari, implying a pattern of foreign distractions.

In response, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra defended her brother, stating, “Modi ji spends almost half of his working time outside the country. Why is there a question being raised about the Leader of Opposition travelling?” She questioned the BJP’s double standards on foreign visits, pointing out that the Prime Minister’s frequent trips abroad seem to be overlooked.

Earlier, Balwinder Singh, president of the Indian Overseas Congress in Germany, confirmed Rahul Gandhi’s trip, saying, “The Member of Parliament and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will visit Germany from December 15 to 20. He will be accompanied by Indian Overseas Congress Chairperson Sam Pitroda.”

This back-and-forth between Congress and BJP underscores the ongoing political tension and contrasting approaches to foreign engagements by India’s top political figures.
