Following a request by Muslim organizations for a bandh on Thursday to oppose the Karnataka High Court’s decision sustaining the prohibition on wearing hijab in academic institutions, a few stores in Bengaluru were closed. In Udupi, however, there was a mixed reaction to the bandh. The opposing Congress resolved to adopt a neutral stance on Wednesday. Regarding the attitude of Congress Muslim leaders on the hijab matter, a Congress representative said, “We had a meeting with religious leaders and have agreed to support the legal struggle on the matter.”

Following the Holi holiday, the Supreme Court said it will reconsider hearing an appeal against the HC ruling. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana informed senior attorney Sanjay Hegde, who had requested an expedited listing. Starting Thursday, the Supreme Court will be off for three days for Holi and will reconvene on March 21.

On October 21, a team led by NCB Bangalore Zonal Director Amit Ghawate intercepted the package and recovered roughly 3 kg of white-colored crystalline substance, believed to be pseudoephedrine, hidden in three lehengas.

The prohibited material was discovered after opening each fold of the lehengas’ fall line. The cargo was scheduled to be shipped from Narasapuram, Andhra Pradesh, to Australia. The officials followed the package to Chennai and identified the consignor.

R Ashoka, Karnataka’s revenue minister, said on Friday that tight measures would be implemented in the state capital and other districts after August 15 to curb the spread of Covid-19 from Kerala and Maharashtra.

The minister in charge of Covid-19 management here claimed there is no suggestion before the government to impose lockdown in the city, even though a conference under the leadership of chief minister Basavaraj Bommai will be convened soon to consider the measures.

He told reporters here that the number of virus cases in Bengaluru is progressively decreasing, therefore there may not be a major problem. He admitted to making mistakes during the second wave but added that by correcting them, the government is taking steps to prevent the third wave from occurring by raising awareness, establishing pediatric wards, and training pediatricians, among other things.

Etihad Airways will launch its flights from New Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru and Trivandrum from August 7 as the United Arab Emirates recently relaxed some travel restrictions from people travelling from India.

This does not mean that Indians will now be allowed to travel to Dubai, as the UAE government has not completely lifted the travel restriction on India.  UAE citizens and transit passengers from India are now allowed to travel to the UAE.

Last month, the national airways suspended all flights in India and said that suspension can extend till mid-August. But as the UAE revised its restrictions for people travelling from India, Etihad has resumed booking.

From August 10, the airline will add flights from three more Indian cities, and other cities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the carrier said in a statement. Flights from Ahmedabad (transit), Hyderabad, Mumbai, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Dhaka and Colombo will resume.

UAE residents, students and professionals working for UAE government agencies are now allowed to travel to the country. Indian students who want to transit through UAE airports for some other destination are also allowed now if they have negative PCR tests. In the wake of the second wave of the pandemic, the UAE imposed a strict ban on Indian travellers. Even UAE residents who have valid residential proof were stuck in India as the authorities imposed a blanket ban on anyone travelling from India. India, however, was not the only country. The UAE had banned passengers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc.

On August 5, the restrictions were relaxed and the UAE authorities decided to allow fully vaccinated UAE residents, travelling from India, healthcare workers, students, teachers, patients undergoing treatment in the UAE to travel from India. All passengers have to apply for permission to return through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship website.
