Investigation Led by Assam Police and CID
A Special Investigation Team formed under the Criminal Investigation Department of the Assam Police is handling the probe after more than sixty First Information Reports were lodged across the state. Sarma explained that when a crime occurs outside the country, formal approval is required from the Ministry of Home Affairs before filing a charge sheet. He met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite the necessary permission and confirmed that the SIT will send a request to the ministry within a few days to obtain clearance for completing the process.
Multiple Arrests in Connection with the Case
Several individuals linked to the North East India Festival and Garg’s professional circle have been detained as part of the investigation. Among those arrested are the event’s chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two of his band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta. Garg’s cousin, who also serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam, Sandipan Garg, was taken into custody for his suspected involvement. Additionally, two of Garg’s personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya were arrested after investigators discovered financial transactions exceeding one crore rupees in their bank accounts. All seven accused are currently in judicial custody under charges that include murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Singapore Authorities Conduct Parallel Inquiry
The Singapore Police Force is running a separate investigation into the singer’s alleged drowning. In an official statement released on October 17, Singaporean authorities indicated that their preliminary findings did not reveal any evidence of foul play. However, they mentioned that the inquiry could take up to three additional months to complete and that the final report would be submitted to the state coroner for further legal proceedings.

Sarma emphasised that such statements not only question the skills of the state’s youth but also reflect poorly on those who make them. He reiterated that Assam has capable and educated individuals contributing to various sectors and that the state should not be undermined in national discussions

Zubeen Garg, aged 52 and a prominent figure from Assam, passed away on September 19, 2025, during a private yacht outing in Singapore. He had travelled to the city-state to perform at the Northeast India Festival. Reports indicate he was pulled from the water unconscious and later pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital.
His unexpected passing sparked widespread grief and concern in India, especially in Assam, where his fan base is extensive. The suddenness of his death also led to multiple police reports and widespread public discussion, prompting official clarification from Singaporean authorities.
According to the SPF, the full investigation could take up to three more months. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner, who will then decide whether a coroner’s inquiry is necessary. Such an inquiry would formally establish the cause and circumstances of death, and the results would be made available to the public.

Goswami and Mahanta were initially taken into custody on October 3 by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after days of questioning. With their police remand now concluded, all seven suspects arrested in the case since October 1 are currently under judicial custody.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19, prompting a detailed investigation by Indian authorities.

Let us tell you that 6.4-magnitude earthquake tremors were felt in Assam on Wednesday morning, causing a huge loss in the northeastern state.
Officials said the tremors were felt in the entire region including the neighboring state of Meghalaya and northern parts of West Bengal. He said that the earthquake struck Sonitpur district at 7.51 am.
After this, two more tremors of earthquake were felt at 7.57 am and 8.00 am. These earthquake tremors were recorded at magnitude 4.3 and 4.4 respectively.
According to the information received, earthquake tremors were felt in most parts of the region and people came out of their homes and other places in panic.
Many buildings have cracked in Sonitpur’s district headquarters Tezpur, Guwahati and many other places. Detailed information regarding casualties is awaited.
