The Election Commission of India (ECI) is gearing up to launch a major Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list across the country next week, starting with 10 to 15 states, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The initial phase will focus on states heading to the polls in 2026, including Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and West Bengal. The exercise aims to ensure a more accurate and transparent electoral roll by removing duplicates, correcting errors, and adding new eligible voters.

Officials said the Commission will avoid conducting SIR in states where local body elections are underway or imminent, as local poll machinery remains occupied. Those states will be covered in later phases of the nationwide cleanup.

In Bihar, where the revision process has already concluded, the final voters’ list with 7.42 crore names was published on September 30. The state heads for elections in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.

The ECI has already held two national conferences with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to finalize the roadmap for the massive update drive. Several states have already uploaded their most recent voters’ lists on official websites, while others prepare for fresh revisions.

Notably, the Delhi CEO’s website still hosts the 2008 voter list, the last time a full-scale intensive revision was carried out in the national capital.
