New Delhi | Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed all concerned departments to work collectively to protect citizens from cyber fraud. He emphasized that banks, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and other agencies must coordinate their efforts to ensure that fraudsters are identified and apprehended at the earliest.

Shah was addressing a conference organized with the support of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre. He stated that the mule account detection system developed by the ministry should be adopted by all banks to prevent misuse of financial channels by criminals.

Highlighting the growing threat, the Home Minister said that in the country one person falls victim to cyber fraud every 37 seconds. On average, about 90 individuals are cheated every hour. As digital transactions continue to rise rapidly, the risk associated with cyber crimes is also increasing. He noted that these crimes are emerging in an organized manner and criminals are adopting new technologies, making collective action essential.

Shah also instructed police officials to ensure adequate staffing at the 1930 cyber helpline call centers so that complaints can be handled promptly and effectively.

In a separate development, the central government has tightened regulations for social media platforms. Under the new rules, any photo or video created using artificial intelligence must carry a clear label indicating that it is AI generated. If any unlawful or misleading content is uploaded on these platforms, companies will be required to remove it within three hours of receiving information about it.

The new regulations will come into effect from February 20. Non compliance may invite strict action and financial penalties. The government stated that these measures aim to enhance transparency, prevent misuse of technology and strengthen the country’s cyber security framework.

Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Thursday launched Bharat Taxi, India’s first ride-hailing platform operated on a cooperative model, marking a significant shift in the country’s mobility sector. The service has been commercially rolled out in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat and is expected to expand across India within the next three years.

Addressing a gathering at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Shah said Bharat Taxi has been established by eight leading cooperative institutions, including dairy major Amul, and is designed to substantially increase drivers’ incomes while also giving them ownership in the platform.

He said that unlike conventional ride-hailing platforms, Bharat Taxi ensures profit sharing and collective ownership for drivers. Under its revenue model, the platform will retain Rs 20 out of every Rs 100 earned, while Rs 80 will be transferred directly to drivers’ bank accounts. Shah added that even the retained Rs 20 will belong to the drivers collectively, reinforcing the cooperative ownership structure.

Shah noted that competing ride-hailing platforms have already started reducing commissions and offering incentives, including free rides, after observing the success of Bharat Taxi during its pilot phase. However, he emphasised that ownership for drivers is a unique feature that no other platform currently offers.

“You will not only be drivers but also owners of the Bharat Taxi platform,” Shah said, addressing nearly 800 to 1,000 drivers who attended the launch event.

The platform allows customers to book cars, three-wheelers and two-wheelers, operating on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model. Profits are distributed directly among drivers, positioning Bharat Taxi as a domestic alternative to foreign-funded ride-hailing companies.

India’s ride-hailing market is currently dominated by major players such as Uber, Ola and Rapido. Shah said Bharat Taxi is expected to emerge as a major welfare-oriented mobility solution for drivers across the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Dwarka to Kamakhya.

Following the launch of this mobility platform, Shah said cooperative institutions would venture into additional sectors in the coming years to further strengthen cooperative-led economic models.

Drivers associated with Bharat Taxi will receive personal accident and health insurance coverage through IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance Company. The platform is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, which was registered on June 6, 2025, under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002.

The cooperative is jointly promoted by the National Cooperative Development Corporation, IFFCO, GCMMF (Amul), KRIBHCO, NAFED, NABARD, NDDB and NCEL. Its objective is to establish a sustainable, democratic and driver-owned taxi service that offers affordable, safe and efficient transport to the public while ensuring fair income, social security and dignified livelihoods for drivers.

Bharat Taxi began pilot operations on December 2 in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat. According to the Ministry of Cooperation, the platform has emerged as the world’s first and largest cooperative-based ride-hailing service and the largest driver-owned mobility platform globally.

Since the pilot launch, more than three lakh drivers have joined the platform, with over 10,000 rides being completed daily across operational regions. Around Rs 10 crore has already been distributed directly to drivers. The platform prioritises social security for drivers, referred to as Sarathis, through health insurance, accident coverage, retirement savings and dedicated support systems. Support centres are currently operational at seven locations in Delhi.

A major political controversy erupted in Parliament after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was pushed and obstructed by members of the ruling party inside the Parliament premises. The incident occurred during a tense standoff between opposition and treasury bench lawmakers, further escalating the already charged atmosphere in the House.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that he was trying to enter the Parliament building when several MPs from the ruling alliance blocked his path and shoved him. He said the act was deliberate and aimed at preventing the opposition from raising its concerns inside the House. According to him, such behavior undermines democratic values and reflects intolerance towards dissent.

The government strongly denied the allegations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissed the claims and accused Rahul Gandhi of misleading the nation. He stated that the opposition leader was not attacked and instead accused Congress MPs of violating parliamentary norms and creating disorder. Shah added that the government respects parliamentary traditions and would not resort to such conduct.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur also rejected the allegations, saying the opposition was attempting to divert attention from its own actions. He accused Congress MPs of breaching security protocols and engaging in unruly behavior within the Parliament complex.

The incident led to sharp exchanges between both sides, with opposition parties demanding accountability and protection for elected representatives. The ruling party maintained that the opposition was politicising routine movement inside Parliament to gain sympathy.

The confrontation has further deepened the political divide and added to the series of disruptions that have affected parliamentary proceedings in recent sessions.

Fiery scenes unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after the Opposition walked out during Home Minister Amit Shah’s address on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, sparking a series of sharp exchanges between both sides of the House.

Shah criticised the Opposition for what he described as a lack of willingness to engage on major national concerns, accusing them of “wasting Parliament’s time”. He alleged that their objections to the SIR exercise stemmed from an intention to “retain illegal immigrants on voter lists”.

He warned that opposing the SIR initiative would politically harm the Opposition in states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, reiterating the NDA’s stance of “detect, delete and deport illegal immigrants”. Shah asserted that the BJP’s prospects in West Bengal would be “assured” if the Trinamool Congress continued resisting the revision exercise.

The situation escalated further when Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi challenged Shah to debate him on allegations he had raised in three recent press conferences, claiming that the BJP, with the support of the Election Commission, was involved in “vote theft”.

Gandhi questioned why election commissioners were granted complete immunity, demanding that the home minister clarify the rationale behind such protections. He argued that Shah’s response appeared “defensive”, saying it suggested the minister was “shaken and afraid”.

Shah countered that he would not alter the structure or order of his speech based on the LoP’s demands. His remarks triggered repeated interruptions from both government and Opposition benches, ultimately culminating in the walkout.

Andhra Pradesh | At least nine people, including eight women and a young boy, lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a tragic incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga town of Srikakulam district on Saturday morning. Initial reports suggested that ten people may have died, but district officials later confirmed nine fatalities.

The incident occurred around 11.30 in the morning when an iron railing near the temple steps collapsed. According to police, devotees panicked after hearing the sound of the collapse, assuming that part of the structure was falling. In the rush and confusion, several people fell from a height of about six feet, causing multiple casualties.

Srikakulam Superintendent of Police KV Maheswara Reddy stated that the temple is a privately constructed shrine, not managed by the government or the Endowments Department. He clarified that the mishap was not a stampede but a tragic accident triggered by structural failure. The temple authorities had not sought police permission or made arrangements for crowd management.

Officials Term the Incident as an Accident

Police officials attributed the deaths to the collapse of the iron grill and described it as an avoidable accident caused by negligence in temple management. They said the panic among devotees led to the fall, resulting in severe injuries and loss of lives. One person remains in critical condition, while others are undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals.District Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar and senior police officers visited the site and monitored rescue and relief operations. Authorities have begun an investigation into the lack of safety measures and permission violations at the private temple.

Prime Minister Expresses Grief and Announces Compensation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 2,000 each for the injured.

Prime Minister said he was pained by the tragedy at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his condolences and said he was shocked by the incident.State Government Responds with Relief Measures

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha confirmed that five people were injured and most of the deceased were women aged between 35 and 40 years. She explained that the temple is situated on the first floor of the building and that the railing gave way while devotees were climbing the steps. Those standing at the corner fell, and others toppled over them, worsening the situation. The minister added that the temple usually witnesses large gatherings of around 1,500 to 2,000 devotees every Saturday. The tragedy occurred on the auspicious day of Ekadasi during Karthika Masam, when even more worshippers had gathered for prayers.

Chief Minister Orders Immediate Relief and Investigation

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep anguish over the deaths and extended condolences to the families of the victims. In his message on X, he called the incident heartbreaking and directed officials to ensure immediate medical care for the injured. He also ordered district authorities and local leaders to supervise the relief and rescue operations at the site and submit a detailed report on the cause of the mishap.

New Delhi, August 20, 2025 — In a bold and controversial move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday introduced three explosive bills in the Lok Sabha, potentially allowing the forced removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and other ministers if they remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days for offences punishable by five years or more in prison

The legislation includes:

The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025,

The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and

The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Together, they lay down sweeping rules that allow for immediate ouster—without conviction—of political leaders who are detained for a month straight.

As uproar engulfed the House—with opposition MPs tearing up copies and staging loud protests—the bills were swiftly referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) comprising members from both Houses. The JPC is expected to submit its report before the next session, tentatively in November

Critics have condemned the bills as authoritarian and unconstitutional, warning of potential misuse to destabilize opposition governments. Supporters, however, praise the measures as a clampdown on political criminality.

This legislative bombshell promises to ignite one of the most heated episodes of this Monsoon Session—redefining political accountability in India, for better or worse.
