]]>The incident took place after the aircraft returned to Delhi shortly after take-off, following the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace that disrupted its planned route. After landing safely, the aircraft was taxiing in dense fog when the mishap occurred. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
Engine ingestion refers to a situation where a jet engine draws in a foreign object such as debris, tools, birds, or baggage containers instead of clean air. Unverified visuals circulating online showed visible damage to the aircraft’s right-side engine.
Following the incident, the aircraft has been grounded for inspection and repairs, adding pressure to Air India’s widebody fleet, with one of its six Airbus A350 aircraft already out of service.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has initiated an investigation to determine how the foreign object entered the taxiway area and was ingested by the engine.
In a statement, Air India confirmed that Flight AI101 was forced to return to Delhi due to Iranian airspace restrictions and subsequently encountered a foreign object while taxiing in low visibility conditions, resulting in damage to the right engine. The airline, however, did not officially identify the object involved.
A civil aviation ministry spokesperson later clarified that the aircraft landed safely on Runway 28 and was taxiing toward the apron when the right engine ingested a cargo container at the taxiway N and N4 junction. The incident occurred at around 05:25 IST, when visibility was marginal.
Preliminary findings suggest that a tug operated by a ground handling agency was transporting baggage containers to the Baggage Makeup Area at Terminal 3. While crossing the intersection, one container reportedly toppled onto the taxiway and was subsequently ingested by the aircraft’s No. 2 engine.
After metal debris was cleared from the area, the aircraft was moved to parking stand 244. The DGCA investigation is ongoing to assess procedural lapses and determine accountability.

]]>A statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation explained that Air India is authorised to issue ARCs for its fleet after conducting an annual examination of maintenance documentation, the physical state of the aircraft, and compliance with regulatory airworthiness norms.
The ARC functions as an endorsement of the aircraft’s primary Certificate of Airworthiness, confirming that it continues to meet mandatory safety and maintenance standards.
After Vistara merged with Air India in 2024, the DGCA assumed responsibility for performing the first ARC renewal for all seventy former Vistara aircraft. The regulator has already issued renewed ARCs for 69 of these aircraft after verifying that the airline met the required conditions.
The remaining aircraft was grounded for an engine replacement shortly after Air India submitted its renewal request. During the downtime, the ARC lapsed, yet the aircraft was cleared to return to service once the engine work was completed.
On 26 November 2025, Air India notified the DGCA that the aircraft had operated eight commercial flights while its ARC was expired, leading the regulator to launch an immediate investigation and order the grounding of the aircraft. The Ministry confirmed that the renewal procedure for the aircraft’s ARC is currently in progress.

Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara, three additional flights carrying Indians evacuated from Kabul, landed in the national capital earlier in the day from Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe and Qatar’s Doha. According to government sources, India has been granted permission to fly two aircraft per day from Kabul to remove its people stranded in Afghanistan.

]]>Due to the uncertainty generated by the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan following the collapse of the Ashraf Ghani government on Sunday, India decided to withdraw the ambassador and all other employees from the mission in Kabul, thus closing the embassy for the second time since 1996.
On Monday and Tuesday, about 200 Indian officials and security personnel were flown out of Kabul in two groups on two C-17 military heavy-lift aircraft, with the flights done in secrecy despite the Taliban’s chaotic occupancy of Kabul.

]]>These flights will divert to Doha or UAE and after refuelling fly to Delhi. Due to airspace closure, Air India had to cancel its Delhi-Kabul-Delhi flight that was supposed to operate on Monday. Vistara says it has stopped overflying Afghan airspace on its Delhi-London flights.
This closure will mean all flights between Delhi and the west, will have to take a longer alternate routes. Many other international flights flying between the east and the west will also be affected.
As the airspace restrictions kicked in, Air India’s Chicago-Delhi was enroute. It took a U-turn just before the Afghan airspace and is now diverting to Doha/UAE for refuelling before continuing its journey to Delhi. A Terra Avia Baku-Delhi also changed course enroute for the same reason.
This happened late Monday morning (India time) when the Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority (ACAA) issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) advising transit aircraft to reroute. The NOTAM added that Kabul airspace had been released to the military. ACAA said any transit through Kabul airspace — which covers all of Afghanistan — would be uncontrolled.
“Afghan airspace has been declared uncontrolled. Due to that the Kabul flight had to be cancelled. We are working out alternate routes for another affected flights that needed to overly Afghanistan,” said an AI official.
A Vistara spokesperson said: “We have stopped using Afghanistan airspace and are taking an alternate route for our flights to and from London Heathrow. We are closely working with the relevant authorities to monitor and assess the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of our passengers, staff and aircraft.”
“Air India flight 244 Kabul-Delhi on August 16, 2021, stands cancelled,” a passenger who was booked to fly back to Delhi on this flight got this message on Monday while at Kabul airport. The Airbus A320 was fully booked on the return flight to Delhi, with 33 passengers from Monday’s flight who could not reach the airport.
Thousands of people are gathered at Kabul airport, including on the tarmac to fly out of the country. Troops guarding the airport had to fire in air several times to disperse the crowds.
Afghan airspace closure will mean flights between the east and the west, and north India and the west, will have to take longer routes. Airlines have prepared alternate for this scenario long time back.

The Indian Meteorological Department has earlier issued an orange alert for Mumbai due to the prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The Air India Express flight carrying 190 passengers including 10 infants skidded while landing at Karipur airport in Kozhikode on August 7.
Earlier, Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that an inquiry has been ordered under the Aircraft Act, black boxes of flight IX-1344 have been recovered and added that the findings of this investigation will be made public.
