In the violent demonstrations against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the maximum deaths have occurred in the Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh.
Although clashes over Modi’s visit started in the Betul Mukarram area of Dhaka, it took the most violent form in Brahmanbaria.
Of the 12 confirmed deaths, six have occurred in this district. Several government offices and cultural institutions were set on fire in the city on Sunday.
A family was trapped in a fire in their house at Banik Para in Brahmanbaria.
A housewife and mother of two tells about the attack on her house on Sunday. She says, “We live on the ground floor of the building. They came and said get out. They set fire. But we didn’t have the courage to open the door. There was a fire in front of the door.”
Unable to get out of the house, she went to the roof of a five-storey building with her husband, a 90-year-old mother-in-law.
She says, “The whole building was blackened by smoke. I have a child who is physically disabled. I was not able to find the children in the smoke.”
Local journalist Mashuk Hriday compared the violence in Brahmanbaria on the battlefield on Sunday.
He said, “The attackers created an atmosphere of fear, in which everyone, from the businessman to the people of the houses there, was frightened.”
Like many other districts, Brahmanbaria is situated around a road. The name of the road is TA Road.
Everything important for the city is located on both sides of this road.
According to local administration, journalists and eyewitnesses, other government buildings on both sides of the TA road were set on fire, including the district headquarters, municipal council, arts, central library, municipal auditorium, land office and press club. The violence started at 11 am.
The train passing through the burnt railway station was also attacked.
Another eyewitness, who is a lawyer, told what he saw in the Kali temple in the city.
“I went to the Kali temple and saw that the loot was going on. The idols of the temple were being broken and the donation box was being opened and the police was nowhere. She was in the police station. They had two water canons and two Were burnt. But they had no way of self-defense. “
