At the 16th Mumbai Film Festival in 2014, Rajukmar Hirani for the ‘Special Film Presentation’ was an audience with the audience on the subject of the film ‘Anand’ (1971).
During this, he narrated an interesting part of his childhood – it happened that Hirani was going to the theater with a relative to watch the movie ‘Anand’. The day they had to go, someone pocketed their relative the same day.
Due to Rajkumar Hirani’s child-hood, his relatives finally took him along and went to the police to report the disappearance of the purse. He told the police that there were two tickets of the film ‘Anand’ with money and driving license in that purse. Coincidentally, he also revealed the ticket number.
Hearing this, the police took him to the theater and after a few minutes, he was present with both the purse and the pokemon. The policeman smiled at him and said that I knew that if he had a ticket, he would definitely come to see this film.
This story connected with the memories of Rajkumar Hirani is not only an incident but also an interesting illustration of the success of ‘Anand’ (1971) and its charm power.
There are many stories about Anand’s casting as well. Some of whom have even taken the form of legends. It is said that the characters of Bhaskar and Anand in the film were originally written keeping in mind Kishore Kumar and Mehmood.
Later Shashi Kapoor and Raj Kapoor were also considered. However, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were signed as co-actors (Bhaskar) in the film’s lead role (Anand).
At that time, Rajesh Khanna was ruling the hearts of cine-lovers due to his ‘romantic image’. But Anand’s character was very different from that established image of him. Also, there was no actress opposite her here.
But Rajesh Khanna created such a romance with his seductive smile, desired gesture and precise fluctuating dialogue delivery that the film became a milestone in his cinematic journey.
On the other hand, the future ‘angry young man’ Amitabh Bachchan in the role of Bhaskar Banerjee, who was angry at the ruck and situation, also introduced people for the first time from his range of performances.
The film ‘Anand’ can also be considered important in this sense because after this Rajesh Khanna’s stardom gradually dimmed and Amitabh went on to become a superhero.
Apart from these two, Johnny Walker as ‘Isa Bhai’ and Lalita Pawar as ‘Mrs. Disa’ are touched by their acting apart from their ‘stereotyped images’.
