On the petition of Bollywood actress Rakul Preet Singh, the Delhi High Court asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take action against various channels that violated the Cable TV Network Act in the Riya Chakravarti drug case. A bench of Justice Pratiba M Singh has directed the ministry to submit a status report in this regard. During the hearing, Standing Counsel Ajay Digpal, appearing for the Central Government, told the bench that action has been initiated against the channels and advisory has been sent to several channels in this regard for the future. At the same time, the National Broadcasting Standing Association told the bench that after examining the complaint of Rakul Preet, several orders have been issued to various member channels. The bench, meanwhile, said that if the petitioner has links to the channels, then she can make the ministry available to take action. The bench directed the ministry to file a status report regarding the action taken against the channels within the next six weeks. The court adjourned the hearing till May 20 with the said instructions. Advocate Aman Hingoramani, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, said the ministry should take action against non-NBCA members and some links broadcast by the media channel should be removed. He said that the petitioner cannot provide the link related to it and the Ministry should take action by gathering this information from the channel at its own level. Rakul Preet had filed an application seeking an interim order against him to stop the dissemination of relevant facts in this case in the media. Riya had said that the media is bouncing her name by associating her with drugs and they are being maligned.
