The Election Commission of India on Friday announced the dates of assembly elections to be held this year in four states including Assam and one union territory. Election Commissioner Sunil Arora informed that this time assembly elections will be held in Assam in three phases.Sunil Arora said that the first phase of polling in the state will be held on March 27, second phase polling on April 1 and third phase polling on April 6. The counting of votes will take place on May 2 in all states. It is noteworthy that the term of the Assam Legislative Assembly expires on 31 May.Sunil Arora said that the candidate will be allowed door to door campaign for campaigning. But, not more than five people will be able to join the candidate. He said that like Bihar elections, voting time will be more than one hour in these elections. There will be online nomination facility for the candidates. There are 126 assembly seats in Assam. It has 60 BJP MLAs. The Congress has 26 seats. Currently, the state is headed by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Significantly, the Congress had been in power in the state for 15 years from 2001. The Congress has formed a grand alliance with the AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Zonal Front (AGM) to contest against the NDA in the upcoming assembly elections. Assam had a fractured mandate in the 2016 assembly election results. No party had a majority. The Congress won 26 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 13 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 60 seats, while its allies Assam Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 14 and 12 seats respectively. The ruling coalition also has the support of an independent MLA.
