Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, which was originally telecast in 1987 is been running successfully again back on DD National from March 28. The re-telecast of the mythological show has garnered massive ratings. According to a recent report by BARC India, Doordarshan’s Ramayan rerun got the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015, when BARC started measuring TV audience.

In the wake of the countrywide lockdown for 21 days to deal with COVID-19 outbreak, Doordarshan decided to bring back 80s mythological shows Ramayan and Mahabharat. There had been a public demand to bring back these shows, the decision was taken with a view to provide engaging entertainment to the home-bound audience, read a statement released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Ramayan garnered 170 million viewers in four shows over its first weekend in its new avatar, the BARC said. BARC’s chief executive Sunil Lulla said the numbers notched up by the series were a bit surprising and called the move as a “brilliant” one by the Prasar Bharti.

The inaugural show of the series had 34 million viewers glued to their TV sets watching and enjoyed a rating of 3.4 percent, while a telecast the same evening had 45 million viewers and a rating of 5.2 percent. The show bettered its performance on Sunday, with 40 million and 51 million people watching it in the morning and evening telecasts, respectively.

These shows are loved by the audiences and making them nostalgic. Social media is going frenzy about these shows with appreciation and memes.
