More than 40 individuals have been detained in Sweden following violent skirmishes between police and citizens protesting a far-right group’s intentions to burn Quran copies. Authorities in Norrkoping fired caution bullets at rioters on Sunday, injuring three persons, according to police.
A series of protests arranged by Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan provoked the violence. He claims to have already burnt a version of Islam’s sacred book and intends to do it once again. Muslims regard the Quran as God’s precious message, and any deliberate destruction or display of disdain for it is considered profoundly disrespectful.
Saudi Arabia has denounced “deliberate misuse of the holy Quran by certain radicals in Sweden, as well as incitement and provocation against Muslims,” according to the country.
