India has recorded 46,164 fresh Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours. The Union health ministry has published data that showed  The country has seen the daily infection count spike, by over 20,000, and the reason for it is the resurgence of Covid-19 in some states, especially Kerala.

The data also suggest that Kerala alone accounts for over 68 per cent of India’s caseload on Thursday. The southern state recorded 31,445 new cases today, the highest in three months. Ernakulam and Thrissur are the worst affected districts. The test positivity rate (TPR) in Kerala is 19.03%, also the highest in the last three months.

The Kerala government said that the reason behind the uprising is the festival Onam. The health minister Veena George said, “We expected a hike after Onam. A special drive is on to increase testing and vaccination. Since seroprevalence is very low in Kerala we have to find the infected and quarantine them at the earliest,” Markets were jam-packed ahead of the festival; last year, too, the state saw a surge in cases after Onam.

In a high-level meeting yesterday, union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan warned the states regarding a spike/surge in Covid cases during the upcoming festival season and advised them to undertake all possible public health measures to curb this. He cited the example of Kerala.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Maharashtra is also a matter of concern for the Centre in Maharashtra. The daily Covid-19 cases breached the 5,000 mark in Maharashtra – already the worst affected state – after a gap of five days on Wednesday.
