Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, was ordered to twenty-two and a half years in jail for the murder of George Floyd, whose last breaths on Chauvin’s knee sparked the most uproar against systemic racism in the United States in centuries.
The sentence, which came up short of the 30 years sought by prosecutors, comes after Chauvin ended his more than year-long solitude in court to express sympathies to the Floyd family and express his optimism that additional information may ultimately provide them with “some peace of mind.”
Judge Peter Cahill went above and beyond the twelve and a half-year sentence recommended by state standards, citing “your misuse of a position of trust and power, as well as the particular cruelty” displayed to Floyd.
